Marvel announces Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 'Yo-Yo' Rodriguez spinoff miniseries

Last night’s winter finale of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ended the Ghost Rider arc in epic fashion (Robbie! Noooo!!!) while dramatically kicking off the LMD arc.

The episode also saw the return of Elena "Yo-Yo" Rodriguez (Natalia Cordova-Buckley) â€" the Inhuman with the power of running pretty darn fast before snapping back into place (just like a yo-yo) â€" who was last seen in the Season 4 premiere, "The Ghost." If you're a fan of the character (or if you're a fan of anything and everything Marvel), then this news will send you over the moon, because at the conclusion of “The Law of Inferno Dynamics,” Marvel announced that it was making a spinoff miniseries titled “Slingshot” (full title: Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Slingshot). But there is a tiny catch: It'll be a digital one.

The cool reveal was made at the end of the new promo for the LMD arc set to kick off on Jan. 10. The promo is an open invitation to “witness Agent Yo-Yo’s secret mission in an all-new, six-part digital miniseries.” Marvel’s new series will premiere on Dec. 13 and viewers will be able to stream the new episodes on the ABC app as well as ABC.com. It's no Agent Carter (yes, I'm still crying over it. What can I say?), but I'll be looking forward to seeing Yo-Yo's adventures.

In an interview with Natalia Cordova-Buckley, the actress revealed that the miniseries will take place between the events of Seasons 3 and 4 (maybe we'll get to see those "dates" between Yo-Yo and Mac and her helping Daisy), saying:

“In ‘Slingshot,’ we’re going to see a lot of her anger and her pain come out in regard to certain injustices that have been done to her and her family, but at the same time, she never loses her humanity. She doesn’t let the anger blind her.”

Here's an official description for the Marvel miniseries:

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Slingshot takes place shortly before the beginning of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4. The digital series features Elena "Yo-Yo" Rodriguez, an Inhuman with the ability to move at super-speed. As a person with powers, she must sign the Sokovia Accords. However, the restrictions of the Accords are in direct conflict with a personal mission she's desperate to fulfill, one that will test her abilities and will include tense encounters with S.H.I.E.L.D. team members.

Marvel’s swamp monster Man-Thing was last seen in the pages of the now-canceled Howling Commandos of S.H.I.E.L.D. earlier this year, but the iconic monster isn’t staying down long. Man-Thing is now getting his own five-part miniseries, and it’s going to be written by none other than Goosebumps scribe R.L. Stine.

Stine, who is 73, has never written a comic book before, though he told the New York Times that it’s always been a dream of his: “My first ambition was to be a comic book artist. I started doing these little comic books in the fourth grade: ‘Super Stooge,’ the dumbest hero on earth. I was terrible. I had no choice but to be a writer.”

Stine, who actually dropped a hint in October that this news was coming during a Reddit AMA, already has his own swamp monster, but he said for this series he was inspired by classic horror comics like Tales From the Crypt: “They were scary, really gruesome, bloody comics and they always had a twist ending. I think they’ve been a major influence in everything I’ve done since.”

But true to Stine’s style, the series won’t be all horror. “I’m going to do a lot of action and a lot of great violence and make it creepy, but I’m going to make it funny at the same time,” he said. “It’s what I try to do in my books.”

Based on the short plot synopsis given, the book definitely sounds comical. Man-Thing will be traveling to Hollywood because he’s “wondering why he is not starring in a major motion picture.” Stine also said that Man-Thing “can talk and he’s very sarcastic,” which is a pretty stark break from continuity, where Man-Thing has (almost) always been a silent, stoic character.

Covers for the series will be done by Tyler Crook, best known for the horror comics B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth and Harrow County. Interior artwork will be handled by German Peralta, who’s drawing the comic version of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Daniel Johnson, whose only other Marvel credit was Quake #1.

The first issue of Stine’s five-part Man-Thing miniseries will arrive in March. You can see the first issue’s cover and three unlettered pages of the comic below.

Marvel's The Inhumans has found its showrunner

Marvel has zeroed in on the showrunner for their Inhumans TV series: and they didn’t have to look farther than their own backyard to find the right man for the job.

So, who just landed the no doubt EPIC gig? The Hollywood Reporter recently broke the news that Iron Fist showrunner Scott Buck (Dexter) will continue his relationship with Marvel by steering the ship for Marvel’s The Inhumans (which is not an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff). I’m guessing Buck got the job because the Marvel powers-that-be liked what they saw with Iron Fist. Which is making me even more excited for the upcoming Netflix superhero series, as well as The Inhumans. Are we 2017 yet?

The Inhumans were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1965 for the pages of Marvel Comics and featured a race of “superhumans with diverse and singularly unique powers.” The new Marvel series (a co-production among Marvel, IMAX and ABC) based on the comics will “explore the never-before-told epic adventure of Black Bolt and the royal family.”

Meaning that the show will feature Black Bolt, Medusa, Crystal, Gorgon, Karnak, Triton and Lockjaw in their first live-action appearance ever (I soooo can’t wait to see that). It was also recently revealed that some of the action for the new series will take place on the moon, which I'm sure will look totally mind-blowing on the big screen since (and for the first time ever) Marvel will debut the first two episodes exclusively on IMAX theaters (it’ll be filmed in IMAX digital cameras) for two weeks beginning on Labor Day Weekend 2017 before kicking off its eight-episode run on ABC in September.

What do you think about Scott Buck coming on board Marvel's The Inhumans as showrunner?

Hasbro’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Marvel Legends Hit Stores This Spring (Exclusive Reveal)

>Guardians of the Galaxy toys are set to be a little easier to find this time around.

It may seem hard to recall now, but there was a time when people weren’t so certain the first Guardians would be awesome. The film was a big leap for Marvel Studios, taking the journey away from the MCU’s Earth-based stories with characters the public weren’t familiar with, and all by way of director James Gunn, who at the time was more known for slightly twisted comedies like Slither and Tromeo and Juliet. As a result, retailers ordered conservatively, rendering it none too easy for fans to collect toys of the team.

Now that we all know and love the Guardians, stores feel a little better about loading up on the merch. For toy collectors, the first big wave of it kicks off in Spring with a release of Hasbro Marvel Legends that combines movie and comic-based characters. From Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we get updated versions of Star-Lord (in a shorter coat and with an alternate helmeted head) and Drax the Destroyer (in rage mode). Don’t sweat that they haven’t revealed the whole team just yet. While Hasbro isn’t announcing anything else at this time, I think we all understand the marketing potential of Baby Groot.

Perhaps most excitingly, this batch includes movie Yondu, and they went whole hog by giving him two different, distinctly Michael Rooker facial expressions. Rooker has been rendered in plastic before as The Walking Dead‘s Merle Dixon, but it’s about time he was a Legend.

If you’re a fan of Guardians of the Galaxy comics, the rest of the wave is pretty cool. The Marvel superhero Angela, who first appeared in toy form way back in series two of McFarlane Toys’ Spawn line, gets her first toy since moving to the Marvel universe. Major Victory (billed on the package by his real name, Vance Astro) is ready to psychically toss around Captain America’s shield, android armor-wearing Darkhawk can hash things out with the nearest Venom figure, comic-style Nova gets a re-do, and when you collect the whole wave you can build the former Supernova and weapon-armed space tiger-guy Titus.

Check out the galaxy below for our exclusive first-looks at all eight figures. Who do you want to see made next? Let Hasbro and the world know your choices in comments below.

Here are 5 new nutty promos for Marvel and FX’s X-Men spinoff series Legion

"Shall we begin?" In the wake of the release of the new trailer and the reveal of the show’s premiere date, FX has unleashed five new promos for Marvel’s upcoming X-Men spinoff series (it’s complicated), Legion. Even tough each promo is rather short; they feature some new material for you to sink your teeth into.

The brainchild of Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley, Legion stars Dan Stevens (of Downton Abbey fame) in the titular role of David Haller, who may be one of the most powerful mutants on Earth (and the son of another powerful mutant: Charles Xavier) and the key in the battle between government forces and mutants.

The series hails from Hawley, Lauren Shuler Donner, Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg, and is being executive-produced by Jeph Loeb (head of Marvel TV), Jim Chory (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and John Cameron (Fargo) and is produced by FX Productions and Marvel Television. This is the first time that Marvel and the X-Men movie team are working together to produce a live-action series.

Along with the new footage, the promos also put the spotlight on the fact that David has been in and out of psychiatric institutions for a good many years (as evidenced by Dan Stevens’ two hairstyles in the promos). Coming Soon has a super-detailed synopsis for the series, so I’ve but it under the spoiler tag just in case.

Legion, based on the Marvel Comics by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, is the story of David Haller (Dan Stevens), a troubled young man who may be more than human. Diagnosed as schizophrenic as a child, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. Now in his early 30s and institutionalized once again, David loses himself in the rhythm of the structured regimen of life in the hospital: breakfast, lunch, dinner, therapy, medications, sleep. David spends the rest of his time in companionable silence alongside his chatterbox friend Lenny (Aubrey Plaza), a fellow patient whose life-long drug and alcohol addiction has done nothing to quell her boundless optimism that her luck is about to change. The pleasant numbness of David’s routine is completely upended with the arrival of a beautiful and troubled new patient named Syd (Rachel Keller). Inexplicably drawn to one another, David and Syd share a startling encounter, after which David must confront the shocking possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees may actually be real. A haunted man, David escapes from the hospital and seeks shelter with his sister Amy (Katie Aselton). But Amy’s concern for her brother is trumped by her desire to protect the picture perfect suburban life she’s built for herself. Eventually, Syd guides David to Melanie Bird (Jean Smart), a nurturing but demanding therapist with a sharp mind and unconventional methods. She and her team of specialists â€" Ptonomy (Jeremie Harris), Kerry (Amber Midthunder) and Cary (Bill Irwin) â€" open David’s eyes to an extraordinary new world of possibilities.
