PR Balrog on Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite:

Several well-known members from the NorthEast kicked our first round of Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite interviews. Today, we head out to Cali with Evil Geniuses' Eduardo 'PR Balrog' Perez-Frangie, one of the West Coast's notable tournament players. PR Balrog was quite formidable throughout the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 era, and achieved multiple first place tournament finishes.

Although he stopped competing in mid-2015, we were sure the news of a new Versus iteration would draw him back in. PVP Live caught up with PR Rog to hear his thoughts on Capcom's newest project.

Infinite looks like it will be the first crossover fighting game that’s accessible to casual players. What do you think the game’s biggest challenge will be in maintaining enough depth for veteran players?

If the game turns out to be like Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, then I can see the game being more accessible for casual players. But crossover fighting games (Marvel type) have always being fast paced and execution heavy and that's what veteran players look for.

What was your reaction to the announcement trailers last weekend?

To be honest, I never get super hyped about announcements until I play the game, but there's one thing for sure that I can say..... MAHVEL LIVES

How important is it that Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite includes the X-men and other popular mutants?

We've been seeing the same characters for a long time in Marvel vs Capcom series, so I don't think it'll be important if we don't have a few X-men and other popular mutants. You have to give the spotlight to the new generation!

Do you think Infinite will create the same following as its predecessors?

It's hard to say without touching the game, but if the game becomes an esport title, I feel that it has the potential to be even bigger than Street Fighter.

What are your thoughts on Infinite reintroducing the Gems to be used as a groove à la CvS2?

I think it's an awesome idea. People forget that there used to be gems in games like Marvel Super Heroes, which allowed for a lot of creativity.

What are the must-have features to guarantee Infinite will resonate with veteran players and new players alike?

Good combo system, no infinites, and fast paced.

What characters are you looking forward to play (returning or new additions)?

I honestly hope they bring Gambit and Sabretooth back. And for new additions, I would like to see Mystique, Emma Frost, and Mister Sinister.

What advice would you offer to skeptical players?

Always support the game that you like no matter what.

Marvel's The Inhumans has found its showrunner

Marvel has zeroed in on the showrunner for their Inhumans TV series: and they didn’t have to look farther than their own backyard to find the right man for the job.

So, who just landed the no-doubt EPIC gig? The Hollywood Reporter recently broke the news that Iron Fist showrunner Scott Buck (Dexter) will continue his relationship with Marvel by steering the ship for Marvel’s The Inhumans (which is not an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff). I’m guessing Buck got the job because the Marvel powers-that-be liked what they saw with Iron Fist. Which is making me even more excited for the upcoming Netflix superhero series, as well as The Inhumans. Are we 2017 yet?

The Inhumans were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1965 for the pages of Marvel Comics and featured a race of “superhumans with diverse and singularly unique powers.” The new Marvel series (a co-production among Marvel, IMAX and ABC) based on the comics will “explore the never-before-told epic adventure of Black Bolt and the royal family.”

Meaning that the show will feature Black Bolt, Medusa, Crystal, Gorgon, Karnak, Triton and Lockjaw in their first live-action appearance ever (I soooo can’t wait to see that). It was also recently revealed that some of the action for the new series will take place on the moon, which I'm sure will look totally mind-blowing on the big screen since (and for the first time ever) Marvel will debut the first two episodes exclusively on IMAX theaters (it’ll be filmed in IMAX digital cameras) for two weeks beginning on Labor Day Weekend 2017 before kicking off its eight-episode run on ABC in September.

What do you think about Scott Buck coming on board Marvel's The Inhumans as showrunner?

RayRay on Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite:

This entire week has been filled with a broad range of opinions by several household names in the FGC. From Bum163 to Justin Wong, it should be clear that the series' true fans are eager to see how Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite will unfold. Many of them are intrigued with the new Infinity Stone-powered sub-system, while others are looking forward to seeing iconic characters make a return.

As Raynel 'RayRay' Hidalgo has been a notable force throughout the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom era, we couldn't pass up the chance to hear his thoughts on what's on the horizon.

Infinite looks like it will be the first crossover fighting game that’s more accessible for casual players. What do you think the game’s biggest challenge will be -- maintaining enough depth for veteran players?

I'm excited for it. With Street Fighter V, I truly believe they figured out how to make an "accessible" game while keeping the infinite depth that comes from the player vs. player aspect. More players. More competition.

How much would you measure the importance that Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite includes a significant amount of characters that contain X-men and other popular mutants?

They have to be in it. They have to appeal to the current Marvel fans as well as fighting game fans. X-Men have been part of fighting games for over 20 years now.

[embedded content]

Give us your overall reaction upon seeing the announcement trailers last weekend.

Well, like most people, I spent the entire week prior to the announcement hearing about the rumors non stop. All it did was build up an insane amount of anticipation. I went crazy â€" literally slammed my desk and started shrieking! [laughs]

Do you plan to stick with Vs. titles exclusively, or will you still balance your time with Street Fighter V and other titles?

I plan to continue playing both games. With the competition at an all time high, I'm not sure if anyone will be able to be dominate without giving it their all.

Many seem concerned about the lack of X-Factor and the assist system. What are your thoughts on Infinite reintroducing the Gems to be used as a groove à la CvS2?

The lack of assists bothered me at first. Trying to be unbiased and thinking about it more, having both characters switch seamlessly is more like having one big character and the gems are like variations. Plenty of depth there!

What features do you feel Infinite must include in order to guarantee it will resonate with veteran players and new players alike?

Versus Mode [laughs] . . .that's always been enough for me. Maybe they can also include a more thought out ranked mode, where ranking up actually means something.

Are there any creative, special modes that you’d like to see included along with the confirmed Story and Mission Modes Infinite will be offering?

Obviously a 4-player 2v2 mode is always fun.

Mega Man X and Captain Marvel are two of the newest additions joining the Vs. universe. What additional characters would you like to see added to the roster?

I'm a fighting game fan, not a comic book fan. I want to see all the classic fighters come back.

What insight would you offer for anyone that feels skeptical about Infinite's success?

Being skeptical with so little information makes no sense. It's that simple. With fighters evolving faster than ever, I say let's crack it open and make it our own again.

Fox Sets Release Dates for Two Secret Marvel Movies; Pushes ‘Kingsman 2’ to October 2017

fox-marvel-movie-release-dates-deadpool-3

In addition to moving up the release date of Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated Prometheus follow-up >Alien: Covenant from August 2017 to May 2017, 20th Century Fox also shuffled another film and set release dates for a pair of unspecified Fox/Marvel movies. First the known: the sequel >Kingsman: The Golden Circle has been pushed out of the Summer 2017 corridor from its previous release date of June 16, 2017, and will now open in theaters on October 6, 2017. That’s quite a different landscape as the film will now be squaring off directly with the sequel >Blade Runner: 2049, but one imagines Fox will be playing up the action-comedy angle of the Kingsman follow-up in contrast to Denis Villeneuve’s sure-to-be serious tone for the Blade Runner sequel. Still, that’s one heck of a choice you’re asking the audience to make, and one wonders if Blade Runner might shift a bit in the wake of this news.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle is no half-assed follow-up either, as Matthew Vaughn returns to direct with an all-star cast that includes returning members Taron Egerton and Colin Firth alongside newcomers Julianne Moore, Channing Tatum, and Elton John. The first movie opened in February 2015 and grossed $414.3 million worldwide, which is incredibly solid for an R-rated action romp. I’ll be interested to see if the sequel can find similar success in the fall season.

The October 6, 2017 release was actually previously occupied by an untitled Fox/Marvel film, which many believed was pegged for >Gambit. Filming on that X-Men spinoff starring Channing Tatum was supposed to begin in Fall 2015, but the project subsequently lost two directors and is undergoing script rewrites, so the delays plus the fact that it still has no director makes that October 2017 date impossible.

But not to fearâ€"Fox is still bullish on churning out features based on the Marvel properties it owns the rights to, as the studio has now dated Untitled Fox/Marvel films for release on November 2, 2018 and February 14, 2019. One of these dates could be for >Deadpool 2, which just landed John Wick co-director David Leitch to take the helm after Tim Miller dropped out over creative differences with star Ryan Reynolds. This sequel is a priority for Fox given that the first filmâ€"a modestly budgeted R-rated superhero movieâ€"grossed an insane $782.6 million worldwide. Production is expected to begin sometime next year as casting was well underway when Miller left, so really Deadpool 2 could be ready for release either in November 2018 or February 2019. It depends on how long Fox wants to wait and what kind of launch they want to give the follow-up. Deadpool surpassed all expectations with some solid counter-programming over the Valentine’s Day weekend of this year, so they could simply follow the same formula and release on Valentine’s Day 2019. Or the film could get a splashy holiday season superhero debut in November.

Or, what’s more likely, Deadpool 2 could take the previously announced March 2, 2018 “Untitled Fox/Marvel Film” release date and February 14, 2019 is being eyed for the >Deadpool 3/X-Force movie that’s already in the works. Fox is reportedly already trying to nail down a director for >Deadpool 3, so the timeline would work out so that Deadpool 2 shoots in 2017 for a 2018 release and Deadpool 3/X-Force shoots in 2018 for a 2019 release.

That November 2, 2018 date is currently home to Disney’s live-action Mulan as well as an untitled Paramount Event Film, which is likely a Transformers movie. February 14, 2019, meanwhile, is currently empty.

So if one of these movies is Deadpool 3, what’s the other one? The most likely candidate is >New Mutants, which has Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) writing and directing and is planned as a YA-skewing X-Men spinoff. Or it could be Gambit, if that movie finally gets off the ground. The main X-Men franchise is at a bit of an impasse as writer/producer Simon Kinberg is expected to try and jump-start things after the lackluster reception of X-Men: Apocalypse, but director Bryan Singer is not returning and the contracts for Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and James McAvoy have all been fulfilled. The plan now, reportedly, is for Kinberg to take a stab at writing a new X-Men film that assumes Lawrence, Fassbender, and McAvoy re-up their contracts, but with so many unknowns it’s unlikely that film would be ready for a November 2018 release.
