Marvel pulls no punches in 2017 with new Iron Fist comic

Donâ€™t let your guard down next year, because thereâ€™s a brand new hard-hitting solo series coming for Danny Rand, also known as the immortal Iron Fist. As announced this morning by The Hollywood Reporter, the new series â€" simply titled Iron FistÂ â€" will be helmed by Ed Brisson, writer of The Violent and the upcoming Bullseye, and veteran artist Mike Perkins, best known recently for his work on Captain America and The Stand.

The first issue will drop in March, and will take heavy inspiration from 2006â€™s Immortal Iron Fist and from the characterâ€™s most recent series Iron Fist: The Living Weapon, which left Danny and the mystical city of Kâ€™un Lun in veryÂ tenuous positions. Writer Ed Brisson talked to THR about where readers will find them as the new series begins:

â€œAs for where Kâ€™un-Lun is and how that affects Danny â€¦ Thatâ€™s going to be a large part of what this first arc is about. Kâ€™un-Lun is the source of his powers and now that the city lays in ruins, Dannyâ€™s connection is severed. This affects his ability to actually be Iron Fist. His whole identity seems to be slipping away from him and he doesnâ€™t know how to hold onto it.â€

This will run concurrently with the current Power Man and Iron Fist buddy book, and is obviously meant to pick up readers that come into shops after their interest is piqued by Marvel and Netflixâ€™s live action Iron Fist series, which is set to release on March 17. But this announcement left many fans wondering what this news meant for Iron Fists,Â a seriesÂ by Kaare Andrews and Afu Chan announced back in July. The series was to feature Danny training the next Iron Fist, a young girl named Pei, but there has been no news since. Luckily, Andrews confirmed on Twitter this morning that the series is still coming.

Iâ€™m a huge Iron Fist fan, so I will take all the Danny Rand Marvel wants to dish out, and Iron Fist has a top-notch creative team that looks set to build upon the wonderful mythology that has already been established for the character. Marvel Comicsâ€™ new Cable series will send the X-Man on a time-traveling adventure

Marvel is giving its entire X-Men comics line a refresh, and one of the most intriguing solo books is a new series based on Cable. Now, we finally know what the studio is cooking up.

Marvel has announced Eisner-winning writer James Robinson (Scarlet Witch, Squadron Supreme) and artist Carlos Pacheco (Occupy Avengers, Captain America) will be leading the new Cable series. It marks Robinsonâ€™s long-awaited return to Cable, after a stint writing the series in the late 1990s. Robinson told Marvel he always regretted leaving Cable, and said the new series will track a wild, time-traveling adventure that only Cable could take on.

Hereâ€™s an excerpt from his take on the direction of the series:

â€œOne of the things about Cable is heâ€™s a â€˜time warrior.â€™ Time travel is part of his make-up in almost every aspect of his history â€" no pun intended. This series will be Cable on a race against time to fix time. The reason Cable must take on this quest will reveal itself as the story and mystery unfolds, but heâ€™s doing it for the sake of the Marvel Universe, which will fall apart if he doesnâ€™t take action. And in the course of Cableâ€™s mission, weâ€™ll see him in a lot of great time periods like 15th century Japan, WWI, the Stone Age, Victorian England, and on and on, all with those time periods made more crazy and sci-fi by time being fractured by the villain of our series.

This series, while not throwing out any of Cableâ€™s past, will focus on him as a character for new readers as well as old ones. The villain is a new character simply named Conquest. Heâ€™s a technocrat from a future where heâ€™s worked out how to manipulate the butterfly effect of times past to make his reality perfect for his wants. That ripple effect has changed the present. Cable has to stop Conquest. Conquest has no intention of being stopped and intends to use all that history has to offer in terms of warriors and villains to stop Cable at each stop our hero makes in time.â€

The first issue of Cable is set for release in the spring.

James Gunn's Fake Idea For A Marvel Movie Will Never Happen But Still Sounds Awesome

Crossovers are one of the major things that have made the Marvel Cinematic Universe such a joy to watch. Unfortunately, there are some crossovers that are almost guaranteed to never happen. Even if they totally should. As it happens, James Gunn and Vincent D'Onofrio are huge fans of each other. D'Onofrio would really like to be part of any Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 were it to happen, but James Gunn has an even better idea that we love.

As James Gunn says in his tweet, maybe they should just do something else, because Kingpin vs Baby Groot is just about the least likely MCU crossover to ever happen. First and foremost there's the Marvel movie vs TV problem that has thus far kept any of the members of Marvel's television series out of the movies. There are simply so many moving parts that it's nearly impossible to get the schedules of the two things in the proper sync. Add to that the fact that the two entities are run through different chains of command, and it's entirely possible that we'll never see a Marvel TV character in the movies.

On top of that, putting these two together would just be the most tonally dissonate thing we can think of. >Daredevil is on of Marvel's darkest series while Guardians of the Galaxy is a much lighter film. We can't even imagine what a character like Kingpin would be thinking when confronted with Baby Groot. His brain would explode. So would ours.

At the same time, of course, we want to see it. We love Vincent D'Onofrio and James Gunn too and would love to see them work together. Of course, there's nothing that says that we can't see D'Onofrio in a future Guardians movie as some other character. As well established as the Kingpin may be, Marvel has previously said that the same actor getting cast in more than one role is still a possibility. We've even seen the likes of Alfre Woodard get cast in different roles within Marvel TV and movies. Her film role was essentially a cameo, but still. It could happen.

We'd love to see Vincent O'Onofrio in the next Guardians of the Galaxy because he's an excellent actor, he can be the Kingpin or he can be somebody else. We don't really care. You know Marvel comics occasionally does "What If?" stories that look at potential changes to the Marvel universe. How about a series of shorts that put random characters together outside of the established canon? Kingpin vs. Baby Groot sounds like a great place to start.

Creators & Details On Marvel's CABLE Ongoing From X-MEN RESURRXION Line

The creative team and plot for the 2017 Cable ongoing series has been announced by Marvel. One-time Cable writer James Robinson is returning to the title, with veteran illustrator Carlos Pacheco, in what is the sixth (and final, for now) X-Men book coming as part of the new "ResurrXion" joint line with the Inhumans.

The big conceit of the new Cable book, according to Robinson, is Nathan Summers' expertise as a time traveler, with 'timesliding' as 1990s readers will recall.

While the X-Force founder has had numerous enemies over the years, Cable's first big bad is someone new.

"This series, while not throwing out any of Cableâ€™s past, will focus on him as a character for new readers as well as old ones. The villain is a new character simply named Conquest. This new Conquest has no connection to the previous Marvel villain of the same, who appeared Avengers/JLA and Thor. One piece of history that Robinson is keeping in mind for Cable, however, is his short run on the character in 1997's Cable #44 - #50. Although its nigh on twenty years since it occurred, Robinson remembers it vividly.

"I remember a great deal actually. I had been invited to a summit by the Marvel powers-that-be at that time. I didnâ€™t have a Marvel book then and was invited just to contribute ideas. It was a lot of fun, sitting down with Chris Claremont, Kurt Busiek and others, planning the new storylines, and it definitely made me want to get on a book and stay a part of Marvel at that time," the writer said. "To an outsider, at that time Marvel seemed to be a place with two fiefdoms. One was the main Marvel characters and the other was the world of X-Men. The two worlds were really apart with many fans only collecting X-books and the continuity being quite separate from the main Marvel U. to accommodate them. I saw Cable as a character that was lost in his own ever-more convoluted back story, and thought it would be great to have him (very much a lone wolf like Logan) as a crossover character that could operate in both the X-world and the main Marvel worldâ€"a tired old warrior whoâ€™s trying to keep the present day in line and make sense of it for both mutants and humanity."

Robinson said he's returning in part to make up for his abbreviated first run with the character.

"Honestly, leaving Cable when I did was one of the regrets Iâ€™ve had with my career. I was overwhelmed with life outside of comics at that time and so I just felt it was one book too many to write," said Robinson. "My leaving helped Joe Casey get a good footing in the industry, which is a great thing, but part of me has always regretted not muscling through and staying on the book for longer. So, when my friend Mark Paniccia recently got the X-books to oversee, we began talking about something for me to do there. Cableâ€™s name came up and an idea began to form almost immediately. And so here I am."

Cable is expected to debut in spring 2017.

Fox Sets Release Dates for Two Secret Marvel Movies; Pushes â€˜Kingsman 2â€™ to October 2017

In addition to moving up the release date of Ridley Scottâ€™s highly anticipated Prometheus follow-up >Alien: Covenant from August 2017 to May 2017, 20th Century Fox also shuffled another film and set release dates for a pair of unspecified Fox/Marvel movies. First the known: the sequel >Kingsman: The Golden Circle has been pushed out of the Summer 2017 corridor from its previous release date of June 16, 2017, and will now open in theaters on October 6, 2017. Thatâ€™s quite a different landscape as the film will now be squaring off directly with the sequel >Blade Runner: 2049, but one imagines Fox will be playing up the action-comedy angle of the Kingsman follow-up in contrast to Denis Villeneuveâ€™s sure-to-be serious tone for the Blade RunnerÂ sequel. Still, thatâ€™s one heck of a choice youâ€™re asking the audience to make, and one wonders if Blade Runner might shift a bit in the wake of this news.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle is no half-assed follow-upÂ either, as Matthew Vaughn returns to direct with an all-star cast that includes returning members Taron Egerton and Colin Firth alongside newcomers Julianne Moore, Channing Tatum, and Elton John. The first movie opened in February 2015 and grossed $414.3 million worldwide, which is incredibly solid for an R-rated action romp. Iâ€™ll be interested to see if the sequel can find similar success in the fall season.

The October 6, 2017 release was actually previously occupied by an untitled Fox/Marvel film, which many believed was pegged for >Gambit. Filming on that X-Men spinoff starring Channing Tatum was supposed to begin in Fall 2015, but the project subsequently lost two directors and is undergoing script rewrites, so the delays plus the fact that it still has no director makes that October 2017 date impossible.

But not to fearâ€"Fox is still bullish on churning out features based on the Marvel properties it owns the rights to, as the studio has now dated Untitled Fox/Marvel films for release on November 2, 2018 and February 14, 2019. One of these dates could be for >Deadpool 2, which just landed John Wick co-director David Leitch to take the helm after Tim Miller dropped out over creative differences with star Ryan Reynolds. This sequel is a priority for Fox given that the first filmâ€"a modestly budgeted R-rated superhero movieâ€"grossed an insane $782.6 million worldwide. Production is expected to begin sometime next year as casting was well underway when Miller left, so really Deadpool 2 could be ready for release either in November 2018 or February 2019. It depends on how long Fox wants to wait and what kind of launch they want to give the follow-up. Deadpool surpassed all expectations with some solid counter-programming over the Valentineâ€™s Day weekend of this year, so they could simply follow the same formula and release on Valentineâ€™s Day 2019. Or the film could get a splashy holiday season superhero debut in November.

Or, whatâ€™s more likely, Deadpool 2 could take the previously announced March 2, 2018 â€œUntitled Fox/Marvel Filmâ€ release date and February 14, 2019 is being eyed for the >Deadpool 3/X-Force movie thatâ€™s already in the works. Fox is reportedly already trying to nail down a director for >Deadpool 3, so the timeline would work out so that Deadpool 2 shoots in 2017 for a 2018 release and Deadpool 3/X-Force shoots in 2018 for a 2019 release.

That November 2, 2018 date is currently home to Disneyâ€™s live-action Mulan as well as an untitled Paramount Event Film, which is likely a Transformers movie. February 14, 2019, meanwhile, is currently empty.

So if one of these movies is Deadpool 3, whatâ€™s the other one? The most likely candidate is >New Mutants, which has Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) writing and directing and is planned as a YA-skewing X-Men spinoff. Or it could be Gambit, if that movie finally gets off the ground. The main X-Men franchise is at a bit of an impasse as writer/producer Simon Kinberg is expected to try and jump-start things after the lackluster reception of X-Men: Apocalypse, but director Bryan Singer is not returning and the contracts for Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and James McAvoy have all been fulfilled. The plan now, reportedly, is for Kinberg to take a stab at writing a new X-Men film that assumes Lawrence, Fassbender, and McAvoy re-up their contracts, but with so many unknowns itâ€™s unlikely that film would be ready for a November 2018 release.
