X-MEN: PRIME Ushers in a New Era for Marvelâ€™s Mutants

Weâ€™ve got a ton of Marvel Comics news in this, your weekend edition of Comics Relief! Aside from all the Marvel news, we also have the scoop on a major indie publisher getting in on the superhero shared universe, plus more comics announcements. Read on for all the details!

With the titles and creative teams announced now for theÂ >X-Men RessurXionÂ run (see our item down below for the final one), Marvel has announced thatâ€"in order to get the entire Mutant Renaissance goingâ€"they are releasing a one-shot special called X-Men: Prime. The name itself callsÂ back to the teamâ€™s heyday, as X-Men: Prime was also the special that relaunched the team after >Age of Apocalypse in 1995.

X-Editor Daniel Ketchum said, â€œResurrXion is all about embracing the [X-Menâ€™s] original dream of coexisting with humans and fighting together to make a better world. All the books in some way, shape, or form, embrace that idea. Weâ€™re going to get back to flights, and tights, and capes, and all the classic X-Men tropes. We very much want to harken back to that era where itâ€™s the most classic iteration of the X-Men.â€

One tidbit Ketchum dropped in the X-Men: Prime announcement was that the >X-Men: Blue teamâ€"which features the original five membersâ€"would addÂ another female to the team. Considering that former X-23 and current Wolverine Laura Kinney is on the cover, Iâ€™d say she is a good bet to join the gang. The last X-Men: ResurrXion title to get their creative team announced was the new >Cable series, but this week Marvel finally gave us the details. The new book will be coming from writer James Robinson, who wrote Cable for a stint in the â€™90s, along with artist Carlos Pacheco. The new ongoing series will focus on Cable as a time jumping warrior. You can see preview artwork for the new series above.

According to Robinson, â€œTime travel is part of his make-up in almost every aspect of his history â€" no pun intended. This series will be Cable on a race against time to fix time. The reason Cable must take on this quest will reveal itself as the story and mystery unfolds, but heâ€™s doing it for the sake of the Marvel Universe, which will fall apart if he doesnâ€™t take action.â€ For more on the new Cable book, click on the following link: [Marvel]

For decades, publisher Fantagraphics was the ultimate anti-mainstream comics publisher. Home of such notable works as >Love and Rockets and >Eightball, you couldnâ€™t find a cape and tights anywhere near a Fantagraphics logo. That changes in 2017 though, as the indie publisher has announced plans to launch a line of superhero books under the banner All Time Comics.

The new line was started by alternative cartoonist and writer Josh Bayer, created with his brother Samuel Bayer (director behind music videos like Nirvana classic â€œSmells Like Teen Spiritâ€ and the not-so-classic remake of >A Nightmare on Elm. St).

The All Time line will have six individual but interconnected superhero stories featuring both veteran mainstream artists and some lesser known, indie cartoonists. The series launches this springÂ with Crime Destroyer #1, (for which you can see a teaser image for above), featuring the last art of longtimeÂ >Incredible Hulk artist Herb Trimpe who passed away last year. In anticipation of Danny Randâ€™s upcoming Netflix debut, Marvel has announced plans for a new >Iron Fist ongoing series, from writer Ed Brisson and artist Mike Perkins. The new series will debut in March and pick up where the Kaare Andrews 2015 Iron Fist: The Living Weapon series left off.

Brisson said in a statement, â€œDannyâ€™s in a weird place. Heâ€™s questioning who he is and heâ€™s pushing himself. Heâ€™s a person filled with self-doubt, but heâ€™s always going to have his sense of humor about him â€" even if heâ€™s using it to cover his own pain. Heâ€™s an outsider whoâ€™s always trying to fit in, trying to find a place where he belongs.â€

Iron Fist will continue to star in the >Power Man and Iron Fist series, and will also take center stage in another title, Iron Fists, by Kaare Andrews and Afu Chan. The new Iron FirstÂ hits in March, and you can see a teaser for issue #1 above. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Maybe as a way of cosmically balancing out the dark and sexy version of Archie, Jughead, and friends heading to the CW next year inÂ >Riverdale, publisher Archie Comics is now teasing an even more wholesome version of their flagship characters. Archie Comics has posted a teaser image to their Facebook page featuring the outline of what looks like a tiny Archie Andrews and the words â€œBaltazar. Franco. LITTLE.â€

Looks like the creators of Tiny Titans and Itty Bitty HellboyÂ Art Baltazar and Franco are coming out with a cute kid version of Archie and friends. The image features the heading â€œMarch, 2017â€, so it looks like we wonâ€™t have to wait long for this one. You can see the new teaser image above. [CBR]

If you guessed that >Goosebumps creator R.L. Stineâ€˜sÂ upcoming work for Marvel was going to be centered around a monster type character, then you get a cookie and a gold star, as the publisher has announced R.L. Stine as the new writer behind their upcoming >Man-Thing series, a five-issue miniseries featuring the fearsome swamp beast.

Artist German Peralta will partner on the miniseries, and Stine will write theÂ backup stories, which will have a new artist for each issue. The mainÂ story of the series will revolve around Tedâ€™s attempt to escape his fate as the Man-Thing for good.Â For the full scoop on this new series, check out our full story right here: [Nerdist]

And finally, this week saw the release of >Wonder Woman â€™77 Meets the Bionic Woman from Dynamite Entertainment and DC Comics. (You can read our review of issue #1 right here). The series had no shortage of artists who wanted to contribute artÂ for the historic meeting of these feminist icons, and several produced covers for various retailer exclusives, including â€™90s >Catwoman artist Jim Balent, Ben Caldwell, Mike McKone, Dan Parent, Andrew Pepoy, and J Bone. Marvel Team-Up: Watch the First Two 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Trailers!

Spider-Man finally came home to Marvel Studios earlier this year, and he made quite the debut inÂ Captain America: Civil War, where he wasÂ Tony Starkâ€™s trump card against Captain Americaâ€™s rebel Avengers. The team-up of Spider-Man and Iron Man was a total crowd-pleaser, so it makes sense that Marvel would want to play up their relationship in the first two previews forÂ Spider-Man: Homecoming, but thereâ€™s so much Tony Stark in these trailers that it almost looks more like an old-fashioned â€œMighty Marvel Team-Upâ€ than a solo Spidey movie.

Of course, Marvel Studios didnâ€™t reacquire the rights to Spider-Man just to make another, completely solo superhero movie. Sony has been producing those for the better part of a decade. And certainly everybody loves seeing Robert Downey Jr. play Tony Stark again and again, so Iâ€™mÂ not complaining about that either. But I do hope that Iron Man doesnâ€™t completely steal the movie away from Spider-Man. Peter Parker isÂ a great superhero in his own right, and he deserves an opportunity to really shine again, and this is his first real opportunityÂ in quite a few years after the disappointing (and failed)Â Amazing Spider-ManÂ reboot.

Everything else about these previews â€" one domestic, one international, both fairly similar â€" looks just dandy. The focus is one the heroes instead of the villain, The Vulture, played by Michael Keaton (hot off his Oscar-nominated turn as the superheroÂ Birdman, funnily enough). The Vulture looks like a high-tech bank robber, which is par for the course with Spidey. Hopefully the future previews will make it clearer why the Vulture is a serious threat, because after taking on half the Avengers inÂ CaptainÂ America: Civil War (including Falcon, a flying guy), another flying guy doesnâ€™t seem like much of a threat to him right now.

Thereâ€™s a lot of unanswered questions here, and a lot of the movie we are obviously not seeing. These first previews are Marvelâ€™s attempt to grab our attention, and take advantage of the marketing potential for teaming Spider-Man up with Iron Man one more time. It may be that those scenes are only a small percentage of the movie, and this is just an advertising ploy. Itâ€™s too early to say for certain. All we can say for sure is that these previews look pretty good so far, and that weâ€™re looking forward to seeing the film for ourselves whenÂ Spider-Man: HomecomingÂ hits theaters on July 7, 2017.

Marvel Comicsâ€™ new Cable series will send the X-Man on a time-traveling adventure

Marvel is giving its entire X-Men comics line a refresh, and one of the most intriguing solo books is a new series based on Cable. Now, we finally know what the studio is cooking up.

Marvel has announced Eisner-winning writer James Robinson (Scarlet Witch, Squadron Supreme) and artist Carlos Pacheco (Occupy Avengers, Captain America) will be leading the new Cable series. It marks Robinsonâ€™s long-awaited return to Cable, after a stint writing the series in the late 1990s. Robinson told Marvel he always regretted leaving Cable, and said the new series will track a wild, time-traveling adventure that only Cable could take on.

Hereâ€™s an excerpt from his take on the direction of the series:

â€œOne of the things about Cable is heâ€™s a â€˜time warrior.â€™ Time travel is part of his make-up in almost every aspect of his history â€" no pun intended. This series will be Cable on a race against time to fix time. The reason Cable must take on this quest will reveal itself as the story and mystery unfolds, but heâ€™s doing it for the sake of the Marvel Universe, which will fall apart if he doesnâ€™t take action. And in the course of Cableâ€™s mission, weâ€™ll see him in a lot of great time periods like 15th century Japan, WWI, the Stone Age, Victorian England, and on and on, all with those time periods made more crazy and sci-fi by time being fractured by the villain of our series.

This series, while not throwing out any of Cableâ€™s past, will focus on him as a character for new readers as well as old ones. The villain is a new character simply named Conquest. Heâ€™s a technocrat from a future where heâ€™s worked out how to manipulate the butterfly effect of times past to make his reality perfect for his wants. That ripple effect has changed the present. Cable has to stop Conquest. Conquest has no intention of being stopped and intends to use all that history has to offer in terms of warriors and villains to stop Cable at each stop our hero makes in time.â€

The first issue of Cable is set for release in the spring.

â€˜Marvelâ€™s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.â€™ Midseason Finale Recap: Ashes to Ashes

Even though this is the second episode after a month-long break, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is having a midseason finale because momentum isnâ€™t something they care about apparently. Last week was about getting the agents back from the ghost dimension so they can take on Eli Morrow and this week we finally get to the climax they have been building to.

So whatâ€™s Eli doing? Well, heâ€™s making a big, weird, glowing chamber but turns out his hired help hasnâ€™t actually seen any money and the cops and S.H.I.E.L.D. are outside and they are starting to have some doubts in leadership. Eli quickly puts those fears to rest by paying the men by creating diamonds inside the lungs of one of the complaining members and tells the other men to cut him open if they want more. Pretty dope power move.

News crews are outside of the building where Eli is executing his master plan and Director Mace is trying his best to keep the situation under control. Coulson suggests using Daisy, Yo-Yo and Robbie to stop Eli but Mace is less than enthusiastic about the idea of using a still-wanted terrorist and a demon serial killer. Coulson reminds Mace that Robbie is unstoppable and is on their side and that they need all the help that they can get. No matter how many episodes we go through, people just canâ€™t remember that Robbie is the only one that has managed to stop any of the Darkhold-related stuff. Coulson also believes that Aida can be of some assistance prompting him to reveal that she is an android. Despite Maceâ€™s shock that people havenâ€™t seemed to learn anything since Ultron (as well as revealing a slight attraction to her), Mace agrees to let Aida join the mission as long as sheâ€™s dismantled after.

With the go ahead from the director, Daisy, Yo-Yo, and Robbie are ready to storm the building. Yo-Yo runs in to do some reconnaissance only to trigger an explosion and gets hit from the blast. It turns out Eli created Caesium (which is apparently the most active metal on Earth according to Google) and Fitz realizes heâ€™s testing the limits of his powers. Fortunately fire doesnâ€™t scare Robbie at all and he heads on into the building. He takes out a few goons and finds the chamber Eli has created. Itâ€™s a quantum battery, similar to the one that was in the lab that first gave Eli his powers but this is on a bigger scale. Fitz has seen the set up before and realizes itâ€™s called the Demon Core (because of course it is) and that itâ€™s basically a fail-safe. If something messes with it, it activates the plutonium within (which Eli made from scratch) and everything goes boom. But before Robbie can do anything about it, he confronts his uncle and blames him for everything only to get stabbed by some carbon spikes preventing him from transforming. He is also facing radiation from the quantum energy in the chamber and Eli realizes the prison rumors of Ghost Rider were true and realizes itâ€™s been his nephew this whole time.

The agents still donâ€™t have much of a plan. Yo-Yo is patched up from the blast and Mace wants her back in the fight as soon as possible only to get in an argument with a very heated Mack. Yo-To and Mack are still having their little lovers quarrel. Daisy has been feeling an increasing amount of seismic activity that Fitz is looking into and the lack of trust towards Mace finally reaches a tipping point as both Coulson and Daisy confront Mace about his dealings with Senator Nadeer. Turns out itâ€™s all pretty simple, he gave Nadder Jemma to examine the Inhuman just so Nadeer wouldnâ€™t release the photos of Daisy and Robbie during the prison incident â€" Nothing too sinister. Mace does however show a glimpse of uncertainty, which is something we donâ€™t see often from his confident demeanor. He doesnâ€™t believe they are a team, but Coulson is determined to prove just how great of a team they can be.

Back in the building, Eli is creating water now; elemental compounds that he says are the first step to being able to create life. Coulson appears at gunpoint with some of the thugs and delivers a beautiful line that Eli should â€œget a girlfriend first.â€ He might be held prisoner but he did bring a chain (!) so fingers crossed Ghost Rider will be able to use it. Underneath them however, the rest of the agents are putting their plan into action. Now it was tough for me to keep up with this logic here. I had to rewind five times just to see if I understood the plan. See, Fitz believes Eli isnâ€™t creating matter from nothing. According to the law of conservation of energy, energy can neither be created nor destroyed. And even though Eli is power hungry, he doesnâ€™t realize the matter is coming from the quantum energy from the other planes of existence. As he steals more energy, the tremors get worse. To stop Eli, Aida is going to rebuild the gateway to try and get rid of the potentially explosive quantum chamber. The process requires Daisy to control the building tremors and to keep Eli and his goons from killing all of them. There are some small moments where Aida is watching the agents in almost a studious way and I feel like itâ€™s important to point it out and remember for later.

Eli reveals the Darkhold told him he can create life after death and Coulson realizes the chamber isnâ€™t a failsafe but an actual bomb Eli intends to use. Acting fast, the agents move in with May and Mack taking out some of Eliâ€™s gang and Yo-Yo doing a super cool slow motion run through the room. Even Mace is suited up in an armor suit of sorts and is tossing people around. Downstairs the agents are dealing with their own firefight as a gang member shoots Aida. Coulson tosses the chain to Robbie who turns into Ghost Rider and tries to pull himself away from the spikes sticking through him but instead lets go of the chain and chooses to burn up Eli instead. And in that moment the fail-safe goes off and the explosion happens only for the chamber to disappear thanks to the gateway.

Although Aida is bleeding out on the floor, she reveals she was programmed to react to pain just like a human would to better help her fit in as an actual target on missions. Sheâ€™ll be fine, but that doesnâ€™t mean she enjoys the process. Daisy is struggling after absorbing all the quakes and has to step outside quickly. She runs out and blasts herself into the sky and ends up landing right in the center of all of the news teams who quickly identify her as Quake. Mace steps in right on time to say she was the one that saved everyone and even calls her Agent Johnson.

Later, she mentions to Coulson how Robbieâ€™s car should go to Gabe but Coulson doesnâ€™t believe she should lose hope yet. He even mentions that the last Ghost Rider came back which could be a reference to the Johnny Blaze version we possibly saw in the flashback episode. It also could mean S.H.I.E.L.D. knew about Ghost Rider way before Robbie. All he says is itâ€™s a long story, which means we might never get an answer.

Daisy is asked if she wants to be an agent again and she says there are definitely parts she misses and is also happy the new face of S.H.I.E.L.D. is an Inhuman. Turns out, Coulson actually wanted her to be the new face but Daisy only says, â€œmaybe in the comic book version.â€ Beautiful. Also Mack and Yo-Yo kiss, so, yay. They can stop fighting, Daisy can stop whining, and everything should be good right? WRONG! Mace approves Radcliffe to work on the LMD program at S.H.I.E.L.D. and that means bringing his research over here. Agent Nathanson is the lucky guy that gets to go do that. And you donâ€™t have to remember that name because as he is packing all of Radcliffeâ€™s things up, he stumbles upon something shocking in a closet. So shocking that Aida shows up and snaps his neck after seeing it! What is it? Turns out itâ€™s an unconscious May covered in blood. Wait? But if May is there, who is having a drink with Coulson at the end of the episode?! Is this May a robot? Is that why Aida is so keen on watching people? Is she learning from them so she can make copies of the agents? If you canâ€™t wait for 2018 for the second season of Westworld, I would suggest coming back to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in January for all of your robotic nightmares. Until 2017, True Believers!
