Marvel pulls no punches in 2017 with new Iron Fist comic

Don’t let your guard down next year, because there’s a brand new hard-hitting solo series coming for Danny Rand, also known as the immortal Iron Fist. As announced this morning by The Hollywood Reporter, the new series â€" simply titled Iron Fist â€" will be helmed by Ed Brisson, writer of The Violent and the upcoming Bullseye, and veteran artist Mike Perkins, best known recently for his work on Captain America and The Stand.

The first issue will drop in March, and will take heavy inspiration from 2006’s Immortal Iron Fist and from the character’s most recent series Iron Fist: The Living Weapon, which left Danny and the mystical city of K’un Lun in very tenuous positions. Writer Ed Brisson talked to THR about where readers will find them as the new series begins:

“As for where K’un-Lun is and how that affects Danny … That’s going to be a large part of what this first arc is about. K’un-Lun is the source of his powers and now that the city lays in ruins, Danny’s connection is severed. This affects his ability to actually be Iron Fist. His whole identity seems to be slipping away from him and he doesn’t know how to hold onto it.”

This will run concurrently with the current Power Man and Iron Fist buddy book, and is obviously meant to pick up readers that come into shops after their interest is piqued by Marvel and Netflix’s live action Iron Fist series, which is set to release on March 17. But this announcement left many fans wondering what this news meant for Iron Fists, a series by Kaare Andrews and Afu Chan announced back in July. The series was to feature Danny training the next Iron Fist, a young girl named Pei, but there has been no news since. Luckily, Andrews confirmed on Twitter this morning that the series is still coming.

<--social-media-->

I’m a huge Iron Fist fan, so I will take all the Danny Rand Marvel wants to dish out, and Iron Fist has a top-notch creative team that looks set to build upon the wonderful mythology that has already been established for the character. Does the new series have you ready to punch a dragon in the heart? Check out the awesome first issue cover by Jeff Dekal, then let us know in the comments below.

PR Balrog on Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite:

Several well-known members from the NorthEast kicked our first round of Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite interviews. Today, we head out to Cali with Evil Geniuses' Eduardo 'PR Balrog' Perez-Frangie, one of the West Coast's notable tournament players. PR Balrog was quite formidable throughout the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 era, and achieved multiple first place tournament finishes.

Although he stopped competing in mid-2015, we were sure the news of a new Versus iteration would draw him back in. PVP Live caught up with PR Rog to hear his thoughts on Capcom's newest project.

Infinite looks like it will be the first crossover fighting game that’s accessible to casual players. What do you think the game’s biggest challenge will be in maintaining enough depth for veteran players?

If the game turns out to be like Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, then I can see the game being more accessible for casual players. But crossover fighting games (Marvel type) have always being fast paced and execution heavy and that's what veteran players look for.

What was your reaction to the announcement trailers last weekend?

To be honest, I never get super hyped about announcements until I play the game, but there's one thing for sure that I can say..... MAHVEL LIVES

How important is it that Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite includes the X-men and other popular mutants?

We've been seeing the same characters for a long time in Marvel vs Capcom series, so I don't think it'll be important if we don't have a few X-men and other popular mutants. You have to give the spotlight to the new generation!

Do you think Infinite will create the same following as its predecessors?

It's hard to say without touching the game, but if the game becomes an esport title, I feel that it has the potential to be even bigger than Street Fighter.

What are your thoughts on Infinite reintroducing the Gems to be used as a groove à la CvS2?

I think it's an awesome idea. People forget that there used to be gems in games like Marvel Super Heroes, which allowed for a lot of creativity.

What are the must-have features to guarantee Infinite will resonate with veteran players and new players alike?

Good combo system, no infinites, and fast paced.

What characters are you looking forward to play (returning or new additions)?

I honestly hope they bring Gambit and Sabretooth back. And for new additions, I would like to see Mystique, Emma Frost, and Mister Sinister.

What advice would you offer to skeptical players?

Always support the game that you like no matter what.

How Many Marvel Movies Tom Holland Is Contracted For

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to become a very fluid place. With >Doctor Strange's release, we're now truly in the midst of its Phase Three set of films. Because the MCU has been releasing blockbusters since 2008, many of the actors playing the iconic roles are nearing the end of their contracts. And at the same time, new diverse characters are being introduced as the universe expands and shifts focus on new protagonists. But how long are the newbies sticking around for? Tom Holland recently revealed some of the details of his contract as the new Spider-Man, which makes it seem like we're going to be seeing a lot of the web slinger in the next few years.

The Hollywood Reporter recently did a ton of interviews with Tom Holland along with being featured as their Next Gen 2016 issue. During this, Holland revealed how many movies he's currently contracted to appear in:

They give you options, and those could be exercised whenever. Like a cameo in Avengers. I'm unclear as to which movies, though. I do know I have three Spider-Man movies and three solo movies contracted. But if you have another movie, Marvel is so good at working around it. They're very respectful of your life, really. They understand that you have to work on other movies, and they try and fix it up so you can work around each other.

That's right, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man isn't moving anytime soon.

In addition to Spider-Man: Homecoming, it seems that Tom Holland will lead another two solo films. This is a pretty major announcement, although not unexpected. Spider-Man is set to be a major player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward, putting the teenage hero at the same visibility as franchise leads like Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man.

Additionally, Holland revealed that he's set to appear in smaller roles in an unspecified amount of films, likely including the gargantuan Avengers: Infinity War. It should be interesting to see which movies Spider-Man ends up crossing over to. Because his introduction in >Captain America: Civil War was so brief, we don't really know how Peter Parker interacts with the various MCU players we know. Aside from his relationship with Tony Stark, we haven't seen Spidey speak with the other heroes, with the exception being his awesome one liners in Civil War's airport sequence. Did he exchange digits with The Vision and Black Widow? We'll have to wait and see.

>Spider-Man: Homecoming will be enlightening in regards to who Peter Parker really is. He seems to be into superheroics and technology, but he is just a kid. Spider-Man's first solo movie will presumably breathe some fresh air into the MCU, while also helping to diversify the universe with an outstanding multicultural cast.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will swing into theaters July 7th, 2017.
