Marvel’s First Phase IV Film Will Be A SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Sequel

Web-head bumps Bad Boys 4’s July 2019 release date.

Spider-Man coming back to Marvel was a pretty big deal. His appearance in Captain America: Civil War was a big deal, and the arrival of the trailer for his first solo Marvel outing is a big deal as well, and following the mostly positive reactions, the good folks at Sony (with the help of Marvel Studios) are looking to bring Spidey back to the big screen on July 3rd, 2019. Despite all the reboot exhaustion and the past decade’s unsuccessful entries, people still get excited for one of the most popular superheroes of all time. They want to see him done right, and Spider-Man: Homecoming feels like a good place to start.

In related news, The Hollywood Reporter name-drops Bad Boys 4 in its report, citing the Spider-Man sequel’s release date as reason for Sony moving the Lawrence/Smith action caper back a few weeks to May 2019. The Joe Carnahan-helmed Bad Boys 3 a.k.a. Bad Boys For Life is set to release January 2018, in case you’re looking to update your sequel calendar, but the most interesting thing in all this as that Marvel's first outing after its massive Thanos-centric Avengers finale will be relatively small and intimate. Colour me excited.

Tom Holland has a six-picture deal to play Spider-Man. Three of those appearances are set to be solo movies, so if all goes well, we can expect him to have a third film around 2021 before potentially passing down the mantle. It’s unknown whether Peter Parker will appear in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War (or its yet untitled 2019 sequel), but we’ll keep our eyes peeled and let you know as soon as something tingles our Spider-senses.

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theatres July 7th, 2017.

Infinite' News & Updates: Who Should Be Added To The Game? : Games : Gamenguide

  • Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Extended Gameplay Trailer
  • After the usual mainstays were revealed for "Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite," which new faces could the franchise use?
    (Photo: Marvel Entertainment/YouTube)

It's been five years since the last "Marvel vs. Capcom" game, "Marvel vs. Capcom 3" came out, and now that we have next-gen consoles on our hand the franchise is well overdue for another entry. Capcom has heard the wish everyone didn't know they had, revealing "Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite" to the world in a trailer premiered at last week's PlayStation Experience.

While we already know that perennial series icons Ryu, Mega Man, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Iron Man, and Spider-Man are in "Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite," according to the trailer as reported by Kotaku, it's time for the series to focus on new characters. It's already also been mentioned that "Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite" will showcase newer Marvel and Capcom properties (especially new Marvel adaptations and franchises), but there are some characters that the game really needs to highlight.

GameRant put together a list of Marvel and Capcom characters we should all want to see in "Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite." From the Marvel side, their list focused on relatively lesser-known characters appearing in new movie adaptations. Groot (from "Guardians of the Galaxy"), Black Panther, Scarlet Witch, Loki, and the Purple Man (who appeared in Netflix's "Jessica Jones") are all characters who have never appeared in a "Marvel vs. Capcom" game yet.

On the Capcom side, GameRant also dug pretty deep to feature characters who could use some time to shine in "Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite." They suggested Samanosuke Akechi (from the "Onimusha" series), a Felyne from the "Monster Hunter" series, Regina from "Dino Crisis," Q from "Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike," and Leon from "Resident Evil 4." The Capcom characters usually tend to not be your usual fighting game characters, so their addition to the game will be more interesting to observe.

Capcom is targeting a release sometime next year for "Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite." It will be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and most likely the arcade.

X-MEN: PRIME Ushers in a New Era for Marvel’s Mutants

We’ve got a ton of Marvel Comics news in this, your weekend edition of Comics Relief! Aside from all the Marvel news, we also have the scoop on a major indie publisher getting in on the superhero shared universe, plus more comics announcements. Read on for all the details!

With the titles and creative teams announced now for the >X-Men RessurXion run (see our item down below for the final one), Marvel has announced thatâ€"in order to get the entire Mutant Renaissance goingâ€"they are releasing a one-shot special called X-Men: Prime. The name itself calls back to the team’s heyday, as X-Men: Prime was also the special that relaunched the team after >Age of Apocalypse in 1995.

X-Editor Daniel Ketchum said, “ResurrXion is all about embracing the [X-Men’s] original dream of coexisting with humans and fighting together to make a better world. All the books in some way, shape, or form, embrace that idea. We’re going to get back to flights, and tights, and capes, and all the classic X-Men tropes. We very much want to harken back to that era where it’s the most classic iteration of the X-Men.”

One tidbit Ketchum dropped in the X-Men: Prime announcement was that the >X-Men: Blue teamâ€"which features the original five membersâ€"would add another female to the team. Considering that former X-23 and current Wolverine Laura Kinney is on the cover, I’d say she is a good bet to join the gang. For more from Ketchum on X-Men: Prime, plus sketches of the team’s new/old costumes, click on the following link: [Entertainment Weekly]

The last X-Men: ResurrXion title to get their creative team announced was the new >Cable series, but this week Marvel finally gave us the details. The new book will be coming from writer James Robinson, who wrote Cable for a stint in the ’90s, along with artist Carlos Pacheco. The new ongoing series will focus on Cable as a time jumping warrior. You can see preview artwork for the new series above.

According to Robinson, “Time travel is part of his make-up in almost every aspect of his history â€" no pun intended. This series will be Cable on a race against time to fix time. The reason Cable must take on this quest will reveal itself as the story and mystery unfolds, but he’s doing it for the sake of the Marvel Universe, which will fall apart if he doesn’t take action.” For more on the new Cable book, click on the following link: [Marvel]

For decades, publisher Fantagraphics was the ultimate anti-mainstream comics publisher. Home of such notable works as >Love and Rockets and >Eightball, you couldn’t find a cape and tights anywhere near a Fantagraphics logo. That changes in 2017 though, as the indie publisher has announced plans to launch a line of superhero books under the banner All Time Comics.

The new line was started by alternative cartoonist and writer Josh Bayer, created with his brother Samuel Bayer (director behind music videos like Nirvana classic “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and the not-so-classic remake of >A Nightmare on Elm. St).

The All Time line will have six individual but interconnected superhero stories featuring both veteran mainstream artists and some lesser known, indie cartoonists. The series launches this spring with Crime Destroyer #1, (for which you can see a teaser image for above), featuring the last art of longtime >Incredible Hulk artist Herb Trimpe who passed away last year. All Time Comics begins in March from Fantagraphics. For more info on the new line, be sure to click here: [CBR]

In anticipation of Danny Rand’s upcoming Netflix debut, Marvel has announced plans for a new >Iron Fist ongoing series, from writer Ed Brisson and artist Mike Perkins. The new series will debut in March and pick up where the Kaare Andrews 2015 Iron Fist: The Living Weapon series left off.

Brisson said in a statement, “Danny’s in a weird place. He’s questioning who he is and he’s pushing himself. He’s a person filled with self-doubt, but he’s always going to have his sense of humor about him â€" even if he’s using it to cover his own pain. He’s an outsider who’s always trying to fit in, trying to find a place where he belongs.”

Iron Fist will continue to star in the >Power Man and Iron Fist series, and will also take center stage in another title, Iron Fists, by Kaare Andrews and Afu Chan. The new Iron First hits in March, and you can see a teaser for issue #1 above. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Maybe as a way of cosmically balancing out the dark and sexy version of Archie, Jughead, and friends heading to the CW next year in >Riverdale, publisher Archie Comics is now teasing an even more wholesome version of their flagship characters. Archie Comics has posted a teaser image to their Facebook page featuring the outline of what looks like a tiny Archie Andrews and the words “Baltazar. Franco. LITTLE.”

Looks like the creators of Tiny Titans and Itty Bitty Hellboy Art Baltazar and Franco are coming out with a cute kid version of Archie and friends. The image features the heading “March, 2017”, so it looks like we won’t have to wait long for this one. You can see the new teaser image above. [CBR]

If you guessed that >Goosebumps creator R.L. Stine‘s upcoming work for Marvel was going to be centered around a monster type character, then you get a cookie and a gold star, as the publisher has announced R.L. Stine as the new writer behind their upcoming >Man-Thing series, a five-issue miniseries featuring the fearsome swamp beast.

Artist German Peralta will partner on the miniseries, and Stine will write the backup stories, which will have a new artist for each issue. The main story of the series will revolve around Ted’s attempt to escape his fate as the Man-Thing for good. For the full scoop on this new series, check out our full story right here: [Nerdist]

And finally, this week saw the release of >Wonder Woman ’77 Meets the Bionic Woman from Dynamite Entertainment and DC Comics. (You can read our review of issue #1 right here). The series had no shortage of artists who wanted to contribute art for the historic meeting of these feminist icons, and several produced covers for various retailer exclusives, including ’90s >Catwoman artist Jim Balent, Ben Caldwell, Mike McKone, Dan Parent, Andrew Pepoy, and J Bone. You can see each of the covers down below in our gallery. [Bleeding Cool]

Hasbro’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Marvel Legends Hit Stores This Spring (Exclusive Reveal)

>Guardians of the Galaxy toys are set to be a little easier to find this time around.

It may seem hard to recall now, but there was a time when people weren’t so certain the first Guardians would be awesome. The film was a big leap for Marvel Studios, taking the journey away from the MCU’s Earth-based stories with characters the public weren’t familiar with, and all by way of director James Gunn, who at the time was more known for slightly twisted comedies like Slither and Tromeo and Juliet. As a result, retailers ordered conservatively, rendering it none too easy for fans to collect toys of the team.

Now that we all know and love the Guardians, stores feel a little better about loading up on the merch. For toy collectors, the first big wave of it kicks off in Spring with a release of Hasbro Marvel Legends that combines movie and comic-based characters. From Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we get updated versions of Star-Lord (in a shorter coat and with an alternate helmeted head) and Drax the Destroyer (in rage mode). Don’t sweat that they haven’t revealed the whole team just yet. While Hasbro isn’t announcing anything else at this time, I think we all understand the marketing potential of Baby Groot.

Perhaps most excitingly, this batch includes movie Yondu, and they went whole hog by giving him two different, distinctly Michael Rooker facial expressions. Rooker has been rendered in plastic before as The Walking Dead‘s Merle Dixon, but it’s about time he was a Legend.

If you’re a fan of Guardians of the Galaxy comics, the rest of the wave is pretty cool. The Marvel superhero Angela, who first appeared in toy form way back in series two of McFarlane Toys’ Spawn line, gets her first toy since moving to the Marvel universe. Major Victory (billed on the package by his real name, Vance Astro) is ready to psychically toss around Captain America’s shield, android armor-wearing Darkhawk can hash things out with the nearest Venom figure, comic-style Nova gets a re-do, and when you collect the whole wave you can build the former Supernova and weapon-armed space tiger-guy Titus.

Check out the galaxy below for our exclusive first-looks at all eight figures. Who do you want to see made next? Let Hasbro and the world know your choices in comments below.

Marvel Comics’ new Cable series will send the X-Man on a time-traveling adventure

Marvel is giving its entire X-Men comics line a refresh, and one of the most intriguing solo books is a new series based on Cable. Now, we finally know what the studio is cooking up.

Marvel has announced Eisner-winning writer James Robinson (Scarlet Witch, Squadron Supreme) and artist Carlos Pacheco (Occupy Avengers, Captain America) will be leading the new Cable series. It marks Robinson’s long-awaited return to Cable, after a stint writing the series in the late 1990s. Robinson told Marvel he always regretted leaving Cable, and said the new series will track a wild, time-traveling adventure that only Cable could take on.

Here’s an excerpt from his take on the direction of the series:

“One of the things about Cable is he’s a ‘time warrior.’ Time travel is part of his make-up in almost every aspect of his history â€" no pun intended. This series will be Cable on a race against time to fix time. The reason Cable must take on this quest will reveal itself as the story and mystery unfolds, but he’s doing it for the sake of the Marvel Universe, which will fall apart if he doesn’t take action. And in the course of Cable’s mission, we’ll see him in a lot of great time periods like 15th century Japan, WWI, the Stone Age, Victorian England, and on and on, all with those time periods made more crazy and sci-fi by time being fractured by the villain of our series.

This series, while not throwing out any of Cable’s past, will focus on him as a character for new readers as well as old ones. The villain is a new character simply named Conquest. He’s a technocrat from a future where he’s worked out how to manipulate the butterfly effect of times past to make his reality perfect for his wants. That ripple effect has changed the present. Cable has to stop Conquest. Conquest has no intention of being stopped and intends to use all that history has to offer in terms of warriors and villains to stop Cable at each stop our hero makes in time.”

The first issue of Cable is set for release in the spring.

Here are 5 new nutty promos for Marvel and FX’s X-Men spinoff series Legion

"Shall we begin?" In the wake of the release of the new trailer and the reveal of the show’s premiere date, FX has unleashed five new promos for Marvel’s upcoming X-Men spinoff series (it’s complicated), Legion. Even tough each promo is rather short; they feature some new material for you to sink your teeth into.

The brainchild of Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley, Legion stars Dan Stevens (of Downton Abbey fame) in the titular role of David Haller, who may be one of the most powerful mutants on Earth (and the son of another powerful mutant: Charles Xavier) and the key in the battle between government forces and mutants.

The series hails from Hawley, Lauren Shuler Donner, Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg, and is being executive-produced by Jeph Loeb (head of Marvel TV), Jim Chory (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and John Cameron (Fargo) and is produced by FX Productions and Marvel Television. This is the first time that Marvel and the X-Men movie team are working together to produce a live-action series.

Along with the new footage, the promos also put the spotlight on the fact that David has been in and out of psychiatric institutions for a good many years (as evidenced by Dan Stevens’ two hairstyles in the promos). Coming Soon has a super-detailed synopsis for the series, so I’ve but it under the spoiler tag just in case.

Legion, based on the Marvel Comics by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, is the story of David Haller (Dan Stevens), a troubled young man who may be more than human. Diagnosed as schizophrenic as a child, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. Now in his early 30s and institutionalized once again, David loses himself in the rhythm of the structured regimen of life in the hospital: breakfast, lunch, dinner, therapy, medications, sleep. David spends the rest of his time in companionable silence alongside his chatterbox friend Lenny (Aubrey Plaza), a fellow patient whose life-long drug and alcohol addiction has done nothing to quell her boundless optimism that her luck is about to change. The pleasant numbness of David’s routine is completely upended with the arrival of a beautiful and troubled new patient named Syd (Rachel Keller). Inexplicably drawn to one another, David and Syd share a startling encounter, after which David must confront the shocking possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees may actually be real. A haunted man, David escapes from the hospital and seeks shelter with his sister Amy (Katie Aselton). But Amy’s concern for her brother is trumped by her desire to protect the picture perfect suburban life she’s built for herself. Eventually, Syd guides David to Melanie Bird (Jean Smart), a nurturing but demanding therapist with a sharp mind and unconventional methods. She and her team of specialists â€" Ptonomy (Jeremie Harris), Kerry (Amber Midthunder) and Cary (Bill Irwin) â€" open David’s eyes to an extraordinary new world of possibilities.

Marvel Team-Up: Watch the First Two 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Trailers!

Spider-Man finally came home to Marvel Studios earlier this year, and he made quite the debut in Captain America: Civil War, where he was Tony Stark’s trump card against Captain America’s rebel Avengers. The team-up of Spider-Man and Iron Man was a total crowd-pleaser, so it makes sense that Marvel would want to play up their relationship in the first two previews for Spider-Man: Homecoming, but there’s so much Tony Stark in these trailers that it almost looks more like an old-fashioned “Mighty Marvel Team-Up” than a solo Spidey movie.

Of course, Marvel Studios didn’t reacquire the rights to Spider-Man just to make another, completely solo superhero movie. Sony has been producing those for the better part of a decade. And certainly everybody loves seeing Robert Downey Jr. play Tony Stark again and again, so I’m not complaining about that either. But I do hope that Iron Man doesn’t completely steal the movie away from Spider-Man. Peter Parker is a great superhero in his own right, and he deserves an opportunity to really shine again, and this is his first real opportunity in quite a few years after the disappointing (and failed) Amazing Spider-Man reboot.

Everything else about these previews â€" one domestic, one international, both fairly similar â€" looks just dandy. The focus is one the heroes instead of the villain, The Vulture, played by Michael Keaton (hot off his Oscar-nominated turn as the superhero Birdman, funnily enough). The Vulture looks like a high-tech bank robber, which is par for the course with Spidey. Hopefully the future previews will make it clearer why the Vulture is a serious threat, because after taking on half the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War (including Falcon, a flying guy), another flying guy doesn’t seem like much of a threat to him right now.

There’s a lot of unanswered questions here, and a lot of the movie we are obviously not seeing. These first previews are Marvel’s attempt to grab our attention, and take advantage of the marketing potential for teaming Spider-Man up with Iron Man one more time. It may be that those scenes are only a small percentage of the movie, and this is just an advertising ploy. It’s too early to say for certain. All we can say for sure is that these previews look pretty good so far, and that we’re looking forward to seeing the film for ourselves when Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7, 2017.

From the Press Release:

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming.  Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine â€" distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man â€" but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

Directed by Jon Watts. Produced by Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal. Screenplay by Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley and Jon Watts & Christopher Ford and Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers, Based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.
