A Marvel Illustrator Talks Adding Emotional Heft to Static Pages

In this week’s episode of Strip Panel Naked, host Hass Otsmane-Elhaou continues his conversation with Marvel illustrator Chris Samnee. This week, the pair focus on Samnee’s work on Marvel's Thor: The Mighty Avenger, a series made along with Roger Langridge and Matthew Wilson. The page at the center of this episode follows a very simple set-up and payoff: Thor’s sidekick/cinematic love-interest Jane Foster (soon to become future Thor herself, though that’s a longer story) takes a call at her desk and hears a commotion outside her office. That’s it. But through small details and masterful layouts, Samnee’s able to add character and life to this opening page.

Samnee talks very plainly about plotting out straightforward scenes. “Ideally all I’m doing is putting myself in the character’s shoes,” he explains to Strip Panel Naked. “That’s all I was doing on this one. I’d read the dialogue and figure out how she would move and then figure out where the camera needed to be.” He goes on to describe what he thinks of pages without high action, “The people talking...that’s easy.”

To get the emotions of Jane right for this page, Samnee gets physical. “I act out all the emotions, but I do that with a fight scene, too. I act it out in my office. I do all the beats to make sure it can physically work in a fight scene and I do the same thing when somebody’s talking on the phone for six panels.”

In the end, it's all about connecting with the reader for Samnee: "What am I going to have to do to make an emotional impact?" asks Samnee. "That's not exactly the scriptwriter's job. It's part of my job, it's one of my requirements, and it's something I take pride in doing."

Marvel Team-Up: Watch the First Two 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Trailers!

Spider-Man finally came home to Marvel Studios earlier this year, and he made quite the debut in Captain America: Civil War, where he was Tony Stark’s trump card against Captain America’s rebel Avengers. The team-up of Spider-Man and Iron Man was a total crowd-pleaser, so it makes sense that Marvel would want to play up their relationship in the first two previews for Spider-Man: Homecoming, but there’s so much Tony Stark in these trailers that it almost looks more like an old-fashioned “Mighty Marvel Team-Up” than a solo Spidey movie.

Of course, Marvel Studios didn’t reacquire the rights to Spider-Man just to make another, completely solo superhero movie. Sony has been producing those for the better part of a decade. And certainly everybody loves seeing Robert Downey Jr. play Tony Stark again and again, so I’m not complaining about that either. But I do hope that Iron Man doesn’t completely steal the movie away from Spider-Man. Peter Parker is a great superhero in his own right, and he deserves an opportunity to really shine again, and this is his first real opportunity in quite a few years after the disappointing (and failed) Amazing Spider-Man reboot.

Everything else about these previews â€" one domestic, one international, both fairly similar â€" looks just dandy. The focus is one the heroes instead of the villain, The Vulture, played by Michael Keaton (hot off his Oscar-nominated turn as the superhero Birdman, funnily enough). The Vulture looks like a high-tech bank robber, which is par for the course with Spidey. Hopefully the future previews will make it clearer why the Vulture is a serious threat, because after taking on half the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War (including Falcon, a flying guy), another flying guy doesn’t seem like much of a threat to him right now.

There’s a lot of unanswered questions here, and a lot of the movie we are obviously not seeing. These first previews are Marvel’s attempt to grab our attention, and take advantage of the marketing potential for teaming Spider-Man up with Iron Man one more time. It may be that those scenes are only a small percentage of the movie, and this is just an advertising ploy. It’s too early to say for certain. All we can say for sure is that these previews look pretty good so far, and that we’re looking forward to seeing the film for ourselves when Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7, 2017.

First Spider-Man: Homecoming teaser shows the Marvel superhero with WINGS

The first teaser for Spider-Man: Homecoming has arrived - and fans are divided.

The clip, which was unveiled this week, reveals that Iron Man has given Spidey's classic suit an upgrade.

Part-time superhero Peter Parker's iconic outfit now has the added addition of web wings.

Although Spider-Man can't now fly, he can now glide through the air as he pursues baddies throughout New York.

While it may seem like a new addition to film buffs, Spidey's new outfit closely mirrors the superhero's original suit when he first appeared in comics.

Spider-Man Homecoming is the latest in an army of Marvel movies and the reboot is sure to make new star Tom Holland one of the biggest young stars in Hollywood.

But the Brit is keeping his feet on the ground by employing his best friend Harrison Osterfield as his assistant.

Referring to a fellow Superhero actor, Tom said: “Chris Hemsworth gave me some great advice.

In the wake of the release of the new trailer and the reveal of the show’s premiere date, FX has unleashed five new promos for Marvel’s upcoming X-Men spinoff series (it’s complicated), Legion. Even tough each promo is rather short; they feature some new material for you to sink your teeth into.

The brainchild of Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley, Legion stars Dan Stevens (of Downton Abbey fame) in the titular role of David Haller, who may be one of the most powerful mutants on Earth (and the son of another powerful mutant: Charles Xavier) and the key in the battle between government forces and mutants.

The series hails from Hawley, Lauren Shuler Donner, Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg, and is being executive-produced by Jeph Loeb (head of Marvel TV), Jim Chory (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and John Cameron (Fargo) and is produced by FX Productions and Marvel Television. This is the first time that Marvel and the X-Men movie team are working together to produce a live-action series. 

Along with the new footage, the promos also put the spotlight on the fact that David has been in and out of psychiatric institutions for a good many years (as evidenced by Dan Stevens’ two hairstyles in the promos). Coming Soon has a super-detailed synopsis for the series, so I’ve but it under the spoiler tag just in case.

Legion, based on the Marvel Comics by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, is the story of David Haller (Dan Stevens), a troubled young man who may be more than human. Diagnosed as schizophrenic as a child, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. Now in his early 30s and institutionalized once again, David loses himself in the rhythm of the structured regimen of life in the hospital: breakfast, lunch, dinner, therapy, medications, sleep. David spends the rest of his time in companionable silence alongside his chatterbox friend Lenny (Aubrey Plaza), a fellow patient whose life-long drug and alcohol addiction has done nothing to quell her boundless optimism that her luck is about to change. The pleasant numbness of David’s routine is completely upended with the arrival of a beautiful and troubled new patient named Syd (Rachel Keller). Inexplicably drawn to one another, David and Syd share a startling encounter, after which David must confront the shocking possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees may actually be real. A haunted man, David escapes from the hospital and seeks shelter with his sister Amy (Katie Aselton). But Amy’s concern for her brother is trumped by her desire to protect the picture perfect suburban life she’s built for herself. The brainchild of Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley, Legion stars Dan Stevens (of Downton Abbey fame) in the titular role of David Haller, who may be one of the most powerful mutants on Earth (and the son of another powerful mutant: Charles Xavier) and the key in the battle between government forces and mutants.

The series hails from Hawley, Lauren Shuler Donner, Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg, and is being executive-produced by Jeph Loeb (head of Marvel TV), Jim Chory (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and John Cameron (Fargo) and is produced by FX Productions and Marvel Television. This is the first time that Marvel and the X-Men movie team are working together to produce a live-action series. 

Along with the new footage, the promos also put the spotlight on the fact that David has been in and out of psychiatric institutions for a good many years (as evidenced by Dan Stevens’ two hairstyles in the promos). Coming Soon has a super-detailed synopsis for the series, so I’ve but it under the spoiler tag just in case.

Legion, based on the Marvel Comics by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, is the story of David Haller (Dan Stevens), a troubled young man who may be more than human. Diagnosed as schizophrenic as a child, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. Now in his early 30s and institutionalized once again, David loses himself in the rhythm of the structured regimen of life in the hospital: breakfast, lunch, dinner, therapy, medications, sleep. David spends the rest of his time in companionable silence alongside his chatterbox friend Lenny (Aubrey Plaza), a fellow patient whose life-long drug and alcohol addiction has done nothing to quell her boundless optimism that her luck is about to change. The pleasant numbness of David’s routine is completely upended with the arrival of a beautiful and troubled new patient named Syd (Rachel Keller). Inexplicably drawn to one another, David and Syd share a startling encounter, after which David must confront the shocking possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees may actually be real. A haunted man, David escapes from the hospital and seeks shelter with his sister Amy (Katie Aselton). But Amy’s concern for her brother is trumped by her desire to protect the picture perfect suburban life she’s built for herself. Eventually, Syd guides David to Melanie Bird (Jean Smart), a nurturing but demanding therapist with a sharp mind and unconventional methods. She and her team of specialists â€" Ptonomy (Jeremie Harris), Kerry (Amber Midthunder) and Cary (Bill Irwin) â€" open David’s eyes to an extraordinary new world of possibilities.
