Marvel Brings Back Long Dead SPIDER-MAN Character

Welcome to your mid-week edition of Comics Relief, comics fans! To start our collection of comics news off this week, we have the scoop on a long gone character from Spider-Manâ€™s past that Iâ€™m not entirely sure anyone was really clamoring to have back. But they are back anyway, like it or not. Read on for all the details!

Proving that absolutely no one stays dead in comics forever, even characters no one really liked in the first place, Marvel Comics revealed Wednesday as part of their ongoing Spider-Man-centricÂ >Clone Conspiracy storyline that the mastermind villain behind Peter Parkerâ€™s current drama is none other than Ben Reilly, the infamous Spider-Clone who also once went by the name the Scarlet Spider.

Dan Slottâ€™s The Clone ConspiracyÂ has had Spider-Man dealing with a medical tech company called New U, which was producing â€œmiraclesâ€, bringing people who wereÂ once believed to be fatally sickÂ or gravely wounded back from the brink of death. Peter naturally thought this all too good to be true, and he was right â€" turns out the people â€œsavedâ€ go a wee bit crazy.

But the leader of New U wasnâ€™t Peterâ€™s old nemesis Miles Warren, AKAÂ the Jackal, as he once thought. Turns out itâ€™s none other than Ben Reilly, the Spider-Clone was was once thought to be the real Peter Parker himself. Last time we saw him was 20 years ago, where he literally melted away in front of Peter. But whatâ€™s a little disintegration between clones? The new Clone Conspiracy story is only half over, so weâ€™ll see if Ben Reilly sticks around this time. If he does, I hope he gets a better costume and name than â€œthe Scarlet Spider.â€ [Comic Book]

Another Marvel event coming soon is >Monsters Unleashed,Â a five-issue miniseries which hits stores in January, which features Marvelâ€™s heroes fighting off the giant monsters who ruled at the publisher before the era of super-heroes. Now MarvelÂ has released a special behind-the-scenes video detailing the event, and giving fans a sneak peek at the artwork. You can watch the full video above.

Frank Miller is still knee-deep in >Dark Knight III:Â The Master Race, but it seems he wonâ€™t be done with DC Comics once that story has concluded. During a panel featuring Miller at the recent Brazil Comic-Con Experience, the >Sin City creatorÂ revealed plans for what he hopes will be his next DC project, saying â€œI have a fixation by World War II and Iâ€™m talking to DC on a project with their heroes at that time.â€ Could this be the big >DCÂ RebirthÂ version of the Justice Society of America relaunch thatâ€™s been hinted at? Or a Superman story set in WWII? Only time will tell. [CBR]

Aside from the JSA, another missing team from DCâ€™s history that might be making a comeback soon is the Legion of Super-Heroes. Although the team has always had strong ties to the Superman family, they are now being teased by writer Tom King in the pages of >Batman.

In recent issues of Batman, we see Legion founder Saturn Girl is, for some reason, in Arkham Asylum. In an interview, King said â€œWe saw one of the pieces in Batman #9 with Saturn Girl, who was also in DC Universe: Rebirth #1 and plays a role in the story going forward. Sheâ€™s in Gotham City, and she is in Arkham Asylumâ€¦ Weâ€™ll see what that means both to her and the Legion of Super-Heroes.â€ [CBR]

Last week, Valiant Comics released a teaser image for their new >X-O Manowar relaunch, and now we have the details on this new series. According to theÂ official description, writer Matt Kindt will begin this new iteration of the character â€œby separating Aric from his armor and sending him to a far-flung alien planet and continue into a yearlong science-fiction epic split into different arcs.â€

Each of these arcs will be drawn by a separate rising star artist, with each artistic interpretation meant to reflect the different stages of Aricâ€™s latest journey. When most people hear the name Jack Kirby, they think of the man who co-created the bulk of the Marvel Universe icons, like The Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Thor, Iron Man, the Hulk, etc. And while he did work at DC for a time, and created their vast New Gods mythology, he isnâ€™t known for any significant runs featuring their iconic characters like Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.

Except once. In 1984, as a tie-in to their >Super Powers toyline, DC produced a series of mini-series featuring the Justice League under the Super Powers banner, and drawn by the legendary Kirby. This is the only time Kirby drew characters like the Flash, Green Lantern or Wonder Woman, and they are all now finally being collected in hardcover format after thirty years. The collection will come out on August 29th for $34.99, and it will collect Super Powers Vol. 1 #1-5, Super Powers Vol. 2 #1-6 and Super Powers Vol. 3 #1-4. [Bleeding Cool]

Brian Michael Bendisâ€™ current crossover epicÂ >Civil War II got an extra issue to wrap up from Marvel, but artist David Marquez is getting some help to wrap this sucker up. Seven additional artists are joining Marquez to complete the delayed final issue.

Civil War II #8 will now have 32 pages by Marquez with eight additional pages, which are being described as a â€œspecial top secret interior sequenceâ€, will be drawn by artists Esad Ribic, Leinil Yu, Adam Kubert, Alan Davis, Mark Bagley, Marco Rudy, and Daniel Acuna. The release date for Civil War II #8 remains set at December 28, an eight-week delay from the originally solicited November 2 release date. [Newsarama]

Marvelâ€™s First Phase IV Film Will Be A SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Sequel

Web-head bumps Bad Boys 4â€™s July 2019 release date.

Spider-Man coming back to Marvel was a pretty big deal. His appearance in Captain America: Civil War was a big deal, and the arrival of the trailer for his first solo Marvel outingÂ is a big deal as well, and followingÂ the mostly positive reactions, the good folks at Sony (with the help of Marvel Studios) are looking toÂ bring Spidey back to the big screen on July 3^rd, 2019.Â Despite all the reboot exhaustion and the past decadeâ€™s unsuccessful entries, people still get excited for one of the most popular superheroes of all time. They want to see him done right, and Spider-Man: Homecoming feels like a good place to start.Â

In related news, The Hollywood Reporter name-drops Bad Boys 4 in its report, citing the Spider-Man sequelâ€™s release date as reason for Sony moving the Lawrence/Smith action caper back a few weeks to May 2019. The Joe Carnahan-helmed Bad Boys 3 a.k.a. Bad Boys For Life is set to release January 2018,Â in case youâ€™re looking to updateÂ your sequel calendar, butÂ the most interesting thing in all this as that Marvel's first outing after its massive Thanos-centric Avengers finale will be relatively small and intimate. Colour me excited.Â

Tom Holland has a six-picture deal to play Spider-Man. Three of those appearances are set to be solo movies, so if all goes well, we can expect him to have a third film aroundÂ 2021 before potentially passing down the mantle. Itâ€™s unknown whetherÂ Peter Parker will appear in 2018â€™s Avengers: Infinity War (or its yet untitledÂ 2019 sequel), but weâ€™ll keep our eyes peeled and let you know as soon as something tingles our Spider-senses.

Marvel Comicsâ€™ new Cable series will send the X-Man on a time-traveling adventure

Marvel is giving its entire X-Men comics line a refresh, and one of the most intriguing solo books is a new series based on Cable. Now, we finally know what the studio is cooking up.

Marvel has announced Eisner-winning writer James Robinson (Scarlet Witch, Squadron Supreme) and artist Carlos Pacheco (Occupy Avengers, Captain America) will be leading the new Cable series. It marks Robinsonâ€™s long-awaited return to Cable, after a stint writing the series in the late 1990s. Robinson told Marvel he always regretted leaving Cable, and said the new series will track a wild, time-traveling adventure that only Cable could take on.

Hereâ€™s an excerpt from his take on the direction of the series:

â€œOne of the things about Cable is heâ€™s a â€˜time warrior.â€™ Time travel is part of his make-up in almost every aspect of his history â€" no pun intended. This series will be Cable on a race against time to fix time. The reason Cable must take on this quest will reveal itself as the story and mystery unfolds, but heâ€™s doing it for the sake of the Marvel Universe, which will fall apart if he doesnâ€™t take action. And in the course of Cableâ€™s mission, weâ€™ll see him in a lot of great time periods like 15th century Japan, WWI, the Stone Age, Victorian England, and on and on, all with those time periods made more crazy and sci-fi by time being fractured by the villain of our series.

This series, while not throwing out any of Cableâ€™s past, will focus on him as a character for new readers as well as old ones. The villain is a new character simply named Conquest. Heâ€™s a technocrat from a future where heâ€™s worked out how to manipulate the butterfly effect of times past to make his reality perfect for his wants. That ripple effect has changed the present. Cable has to stop Conquest. Conquest has no intention of being stopped and intends to use all that history has to offer in terms of warriors and villains to stop Cable at each stop our hero makes in time.â€

The first issue of Cable is set for release in the spring.

Creators & Details On Marvel's CABLE Ongoing From X-MEN RESURRXION Line

The creative team and plot for the 2017 Cable ongoing series has been announced by Marvel. One-time Cable writer James Robinson is returning to the title, with veteran illustrator Carlos Pacheco, in what is the sixth (and final, for now) X-Men book coming as part of the new "ResurrXion" joint line with the Inhumans.

The big conceit of the new Cable book, according to Robinson, is Nathan Summers' expertise as a time traveler, with 'timesliding' as 1990s readers will recall.

While the X-Force founder has had numerous enemies over the years, Cable's first big bad is someone new.

"This series, while not throwing out any of Cableâ€™s past, will focus on him as a character for new readers as well as old ones. The villain is a new character simply named Conquest. Heâ€™s a technocrat from a future where heâ€™s worked out how to manipulate the butterfly effect of times past to make his reality perfect for his wants," Robinson said. This new Conquest has no connection to the previous Marvel villain of the same, who appeared Avengers/JLA and Thor. One piece of history that Robinson is keeping in mind for Cable, however, is his short run on the character in 1997's Cable #44 - #50. Although its nigh on twenty years since it occurred, Robinson remembers it vividly.

"I remember a great deal actually. I had been invited to a summit by the Marvel powers-that-be at that time. I didnâ€™t have a Marvel book then and was invited just to contribute ideas. It was a lot of fun, sitting down with Chris Claremont, Kurt Busiek and others, planning the new storylines, and it definitely made me want to get on a book and stay a part of Marvel at that time," the writer said. "To an outsider, at that time Marvel seemed to be a place with two fiefdoms. One was the main Marvel characters and the other was the world of X-Men. The two worlds were really apart with many fans only collecting X-books and the continuity being quite separate from the main Marvel U. to accommodate them. I saw Cable as a character that was lost in his own ever-more convoluted back story, and thought it would be great to have him (very much a lone wolf like Logan) as a crossover character that could operate in both the X-world and the main Marvel worldâ€"a tired old warrior whoâ€™s trying to keep the present day in line and make sense of it for both mutants and humanity."

Robinson said he's returning in part to make up for his abbreviated first run with the character.

"Honestly, leaving Cable when I did was one of the regrets Iâ€™ve had with my career. I was overwhelmed with life outside of comics at that time and so I just felt it was one book too many to write," said Robinson. "My leaving helped Joe Casey get a good footing in the industry, which is a great thing, but part of me has always regretted not muscling through and staying on the book for longer. So, when my friend Mark Paniccia recently got the X-books to oversee, we began talking about something for me to do there. Cableâ€™s name came up and an idea began to form almost immediately. And so here I am."

Cable is expected to debut in spring 2017.

Marvel's X-Men ResurrXion: Everything You Need to Know

The X-Men have had a hard couple of years in the comics, having had to continuously fight for mutantkindâ€™s survival.

However all of thatâ€™s going to change come spring, when, following the conclusion of its big event series Inhumans Vs. X-Men, Marvel will be launching a whole slew of new titles under the banner of ResurrXion. Instead, the focus will be on what the X-Men are going to do with future theyâ€™d spent all this time fighting for.

â€œResurrXion is all about embracing the [X-Menâ€™s] original dream of coexisting with humans and fighting together to make a better world. All the books in some way, shape, or form, embrace that idea,â€ explains Daniel Ketchum, one of the editors overseeing the entire X-Men line up. â€œWeâ€™re going to get back to flights, and tights, and capes, and all the classic X-Men tropes. We very much want to harken back to that era where itâ€™s the most classic iteration of the X-Men.â€

One way in which the launch will do this is by leaning into the nostalgia of older series, with titles like X-Men Gold, X-Men Blue, and Generation X.

The other is by featuring new costumes. For Blue, artist Jamie McKelvie is in charge of the designs. For Gold, series artist Ardian Syaf will take the helm. And to welcome the new change, EW has an exclusive first look below at Syafâ€™s rough sketches as he worked out the final looks of each characterâ€™s costume.

â€œ[Syaf] designed all of the costumes to specifically harken back to that classic golden age flavor,â€ says Ketchum. â€œThey should in some way, feel familiar.

With Marvel launching so many series, EW asked Ketchum andÂ X-Men line editorÂ Mark Paniccia to break down what readers can expect from the rest of the series, as well as X-Men: Prime, a special standalone comic thatâ€™s meant to serve as a primer for the X-Men universe going forward. X-Men: PRIME

Ketchum says that this will be a perfect jumping in point for fans looking to get into the X-Men when ResurreXion starts since the single, standalone issue is meant to serve as a primer. With that in mind, Ketchum and Paniccia called on most of the writers whoâ€™ll be helming one of the new X-Men series to contribute. â€œItâ€™s a book that represents the X-Men line going forward, as everyone plants their seeds,â€ explains Ketchum, of the comic, which will pickup directly after Inhumans Vs. X-Men ends. â€œWeâ€™re just at the tail end of the war. Theyâ€™re literally picking up the pieces.â€

Ken Lashley will be the artist drawing a bulk of the art for the issue. â€œHeâ€™s currently involved in the X-Men, and will be involved moving forward as well, so he was the right guy to pivot us from Inhumans Vs. X-Men to ResurrXion,â€ says Ketchum.Â

X-Men Gold

Fan favorite and long time X-Man Kitty Pryde will finally be leading her own team of X-Men, consisting of Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Old Man Logan and Rachel Grey. With the X-Men line focusing on more hopeful storylinesâ€"and tapping into some of the nostalgia of older titlesâ€"Ketchum says it makes sense to see Kitty in a leadership position. â€œShe really was the Xavier student,â€ says Ketchum. â€œSo in a lot of ways, the dream has come full circle. Kitty is now the person picking up the mantle and leading the team forward in the name of Xavierâ€™s dream.â€Â

X-Men Blue

With their mentor Charles Xavier gone, the original five X-Menâ€"Jean Grey, Cyclops, Iceman, Beast, and Angelâ€"will not only be dealing with being stranded in the present day, but theyâ€™ll also be aligning themselves with Magneto, one of their greatest former foes. A large part of this has to do with humankind not considering mutants to be as much of a threat anymore. â€œMagneto sees that as an opportunity he wants to seize,â€ explains Paniccia of the unexpected partnership. â€œHe makes a deal with them to take down anyone whoâ€™s going to pose a threat and disrupt the chance to have a peaceful, if not, neutral relationship with humanity.â€

And this is just one of the big changes in the series. Another one is that Jean Grey will lead the team instead of Scott. â€œ[Writer Cullen Bunn] and I just really felt that this is the perfect place for us to see her rise to the occasion and take control of the team. Thereâ€™s no reason she couldnâ€™t lead the team.â€ Whatâ€™s more, Paniccia says that there will be new members joining the team, with the first one being hinted at in the seriesâ€™ first issue. â€œAs far as Jean goes, sheâ€™s the only woman on the team right now. This is a reflection of the fact that these are the original five. But the membershipâ€™s not going to stay at five.â€

Jean Grey

Not only will Jean Grey be leading a team of X-Men this spring, but sheâ€™ll also be helming her first ever solo series, which sees her taking her future into her own hands in an even more direct way. â€œJeanâ€™ll get a premonition that the future she feared is actually a lot closer than she thought. The Phoenix is a very real threat,â€ says Ketchum of the premise for the series. â€œShe realizes she is not where she needs to be to fight that thing.â€

Ketchum says that writer Dennis Hopelessâ€™ pitch for the series was that in between her adventures with the team Jean Grey will also be traveling the Marvel Universe in preparation for this encounter. â€œSheâ€™s going to study with Doctor Strange and maybe have an adventure alongside Ghost Rider,â€ says Ketchum. â€œAnyone who knows something about other forces or being possessed, or speaks to the mission sheâ€™s undergoing sheâ€™s going to have an adventure with.â€Â

Iceman

â€œThe book is primarily focused on older Iceman, because itâ€™s really his journey, informed by the younger Icemanâ€™s journey,â€ explains Ketchum of the aim of Bobby Drakeâ€™s first solo series. â€œYounger Iceman is a hero who knows where he wants to go and what he wants to be as a hero. Heâ€™s completely well adjusted in many ways that adult Bobby is not.â€ Itâ€™s recognizing this that inspires the older (and now, openly gay) X-Man to reconsider his legacy beyond being known as â€œThe X-Man who tells jokesâ€ while also fully exploring his Omega-level powers. Ketchum says that the series will see the character â€œfocus on him getting his act together both in his superhero life and also as a human being.â€Â

Cable

The third and final character getting his own solo book as part of ResurrXion is none other than Cable. â€œWith Xavier, Scott Summers, and Logan fallen, Cable is now the patriarchal figure of the X-Men line,â€ explains Paniccia. â€œThe big man gets the big solo series.â€ The seriesâ€"which Paniccia says is one of the darker of the ResurrXion line upâ€"will see the X-Man traveling back and forth through different time periods in order to fix time itself. â€œItâ€™s one of the best things about Cable in one book,â€ says Ketchum. â€œCable jumping through time, and kicking ass, with preposterously huge guns and even bigger shoulder pads.â€Â

Generation X

Writer: Christina Strain Artist: Amilcar Pinna

â€œNot all mutants are created equal,â€ says Ketchum of series writer Christina Strainâ€™s pitch for the series. â€œWhen you look at the line of X-Men, not every mutant is destined to be a world-saving X-Man. Some are just kids with a bunch of extra eyeballs.â€ And itâ€™s exactly these young mutants that the series will focus onâ€"a group of â€œlovable losersâ€ led by none other than Jubilee, and includes Nature Girl, Eye Boy, Bling, and Quentin Quire just to name a few.

â€œYouâ€™re going to see these kids go through all the growing pains of finding their way, finding out who you love, trust, or donâ€™t,â€ says Ketchm of what you can expect from the series â€œ[Theyâ€™ll be] learning those hard lessons and fighting for their lives all along.â€ Ketchum adds that part of the fun of the book is watching these inexperienced teens encounter villains theyâ€™re not really equipped to go up against. â€œWhat does a girl who talks to squirrels do against a sentinel?â€

And just like Blue and Gold, the series will pay homage to the series from which its name comesâ€"and not just be continuing to be a book about Xavierâ€™s School for Gifted Youngsters. Teases Ketchum, â€œOne of the villains is actually from the original series because we wanted to make sure we paid homage to the predecessors.â€Â

Weapon X

â€œWeapon X is back as a reaction to [mutantsâ€™] resilience to extinction. Itâ€™s like bringing out a can of industrial Raid,â€ explains Paniccia of the titular program. â€œTheyâ€™re going to wipe [mutants] out for good this time.â€ And as part of the programâ€™s bid to extinguish mutants forever, theyâ€™ll primarily be going after the mutants they know are going to â€œfight dirty,â€ including Old Man Logan, Sabretooth, Warpath, Lady Deathstrike, and Domino.

And with the seriesâ€™ core group being a mix of heroes and villains, the teamâ€™s dynamic is going to definitely be interesting. â€œLogan and Sabretooth have no love for each other, so it speaks volumes for how effective and dangerous the Weapon X program is for him to end up seeking out Sabretooth and forming an alliance with him,â€ says Paniccia. â€œItâ€™s going to be a dark book. Itâ€™s arguably our darkest book out of the line, and is going to have some really shocking moments in it.â€Â
