Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Wants to Be Approachable Yet Complex

How the fighter is trying to appeal to newcomers and the hardcore through elegant design choices.

Back in 2011, I bought a copy of Marvel vs. Capcom 3, with the aspiration of mastering its systems. Unfortunately as someone who has no real fighting game experience and is inherently lazy, I found it a pretty intimidating experience. In fact, I can still see it on my shelf now as I write this, quietly judging me. So when Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite says it wants to be accessible, I appreciate the olive branch.

I also realise that, for some, a word like ‘accessibility’ has other strong connotations when applied to a genre like fighting games. To the hardcore it might imply a lack of depth, but as Bill Rosemann â€" Creative Director at Marvel Games â€" tells me, that’s necessarily true and it’s something Marvel has a lot of experience with.

“A very key thing to Marvel in everything we create is accessible,” says Rosemann. “Whether you start reading the comics, or you start watching a TV show, or you’re seeing a film â€" we always say this may be their first comic, TV show, or film. It may be Doctor Strange or it may be Captain America: Civil War.

"So we start all of our stories very accessible, but we reward long term fans â€" so the more you read, the more you watch, you begin to make all of these connections. You watch a film, and you see Nick Fury approach another one of these characters and make these connections. The more you read, the more you watch, the more you see that it is very complex and interesting, and we reward you with your time. The game is the same way: very accessible, the more you play, the more you experiment... we’re going to reward all that time you’re putting into it.”

What we’re trying to do is make the game more elegant and simplified but still as complex and hardcore as it’s ever been.

Marvel has the mindset that any issue could be a person’s first, and that approach is informing Infinite. But as with previous games, it can still lead to a feeling, especially among die-hard fans, that their game is being taken away or diluted. I remember a similar conversation hovering around Dark Souls 2, yet that game turned out to be just as demanding as its predecessor. It does, however, make some of its systems easier to understand, which is no bad thing. Dark Souls doesn’t suffer noobs gladly.

“What we’re trying to do is make the game more elegant and simplified but still as complex and hardcore as it’s ever been,” says Mike Jones, Executive Producer at Marvel Games. “But we do want it to be approachable.” Jones stressed this was a new phase in the series â€" hence no ‘4’ in the title â€" and part of that goal is to attract a wider audience but not at the expense of alienating long-time fans.

“Say if you just love these characters and you want to hear a great story and see some great actions â€" it’s completely approachable in terms of how the systems work and in terms of how the controls work, but that depth is there if you want to find.”

Infinity Stones: Elegant Complexity

Even though the team wouldn’t be drawn into specifics, Peter Rosas - aka Combofiend - a former pro-player and an associate producer on the project teased where that complexity is to be found.

“There’s a very heavy technical aspect required to play the old ones,” says Rosas. “MvC2 is very unforgiving if you’re not very technical. But with this one [...] because it’s 2 vs. 2. It’s instantly that much more accessible. What you have is players who can just jump in, pick two of their favourite heroes; they don’t have to worry about assists. They’re not bogged down with all these decisions. Character, character, and your stone.”

Ryu activates the Power Stone.

The Infinity Stones â€" a recurring plot device in the Marvel Universe and soon to be a huge element in the MCU â€" unlock Infinite’s complexity and depth.

“We understand that three characters has been a staple for the last 16 years or so,” says Rosas. “To that effect we looking at the stones, and we were looking at a third character, and when you think about how teams were in the older games: what you had were two characters and then a third character who was a function, whether it be some type of pick-up or just for their assist â€" they weren’t picked because they were necessarily liked. They were picked for their functionality.

“So then taking that into account we thought what if we used the stones as functionality. What if we applied the stones to the team and then you modify the team entirely. So now you have the stone acting as a third character but also more than as the third character. The stone modifies the team in a way that really lets a player to create their own identity.

“Say I play a team of Ryu and Captain Marvel, and he plays the same, and he plays the same. But I play the time stone, and he plays with the power stone, and he plays with the mind stone. Suddenly, our tactics are very different. Our strategies are very different, and now we’re having a discussion which team is the best? What is the best way to customise the team? What’s the best strategy? It begins this discussion now. There’s much more customisation. There’s much more depth.”

While the specifics weren’t forthcoming, each stones seemingly applies a team-wide buff, which can be used to either compensate for a fighter’s weakness, amplify one of their strengths, or add an element they lack entirely.

“So you see with Ryu [in the trailer] he uses the power stone to knock Captain Marvel against the wall,” explains Rosas. “So suddenly characters who didn’t have that ability have a way to extend combos or knock the opponent back. There are multiple uses for them. In addition to that, there’s a final effect we’re looking into.”

The Infinity Stones unlock thousands of different permutations to play around with. Or as Rosas describes it: it’s “for guys who want to sit in the lab and discover things through endless possibilities.”

Captain Marvel uses the Time Stone.

In the Marvel Universe, the Infinity Stones are among the most powerful objects, and in a neat move Infinite is applying that story logic to the fighting genre.

“They allow you to break the rules of the universe,” says Jones. “So thinking about it through a fighting game lens: what rules of fighting games would the Infinity stones allow you to break? So we’re looking at attack, mobility, vitality, space control â€" all those things where we’re adding tool to a character’s toolset that they might not have otherwise.”

“So with Captain Marvel [in the trailer],” says Rosas. “You saw she activated the time stone. All her attacks were extremely fast. She broke the law of time.”

And Jones expects this Infinity Stone system to drive the game’s meta in the long-run:

“You look at the history of fighting games [...] people have their favourites, but ultimately what happens is only five or six [characters] who have the tools surface to the top and are worth playing if you want to be competitive. What the [Infinity stones] allow you to augment the entire roster, and make up for weaknesses or double-down on strengths to create strategies and, hopefully, the metagame discussion we end up hearing is Ryu with the mind stone is OP, or Captain with the time zone is the best thing you could possibly do, but if you do X and use this set-up it’s way better to use the reality stone... or whatever it is. That’s sort of the lab experimentation, hardcore fighting game that we hope emerge.”

Read on for how Infinite is taking cues from Civil War and who we can expect to appear in the character roster.

During the Capcom Cup 2016 broadcasted by ESPN 2, the trailer for the "Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite" was shown to the public. Further details will be shared when both of the company's executive producers meet at the middle to propose a release date and the game's accessibility.

More Characters For 'Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite'

The "Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite" trailer feature four of the well-known characters in the franchise namely Ryu, Mega Man, Iron Man and Captain Marvel. However, there are news that Captain America and Morrigan will still be on the roster for the upcoming "Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite" in 2017.

Furthermore, Morrigan is from the Capcom game "Darkstalkers" series, while Captain America is from the Marvel Comic Universe. Based on the trailer, Morrigan's long running Darkness illusion is still the pick for an ultimate for the character in "Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite" and Captain America is also seen performing the character's iconic Hyper Charging Star move.

The "Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite" is said to be a two on two battle with the third character in an assist mode, thus bring the latest sequel back to its roots from the previous games titles. Characters can also use one of the six Infinity Gems that creates some kind of power boost.

Each Infinity Gem in the "Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite" has different advantages to whoever uses one and also represents a different aspect of the Universe namely Space, Time, Power, Reality, Soul, and Mind. In the trailer, viewers can see Ryu using the Power Gem, before Ms. Marvel uses the Time Gem to counter Ryu's attack.

'Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite' Release Date

"Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite" is said to be available in PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the PC platforms in 2017. However, both Marvel and Capcom are still negotiating terms when the game title will be released.

Marvel game executive producer, Mike Jones and Capcom's Michael Evans were at the PlayStation Experience and discussed "Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite plans. Evans stated that "Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite" will be released when it's ready due to the fact that Capcom is making its time to make sure the story and gameplay is intact and will go directly as planned.

How Many Marvel Movies Tom Holland Is Contracted For

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to become a very fluid place. With >Doctor Strange's release, we're now truly in the midst of its Phase Three set of films. Because the MCU has been releasing blockbusters since 2008, many of the actors playing the iconic roles are nearing the end of their contracts. And at the same time, new diverse characters are being introduced as the universe expands and shifts focus on new protagonists. But how long are the newbies sticking around for? Tom Holland recently revealed some of the details of his contract as the new Spider-Man, which makes it seem like we're going to be seeing a lot of the web slinger in the next few years.

The Hollywood Reporter recently did a ton of interviews with Tom Holland along with being featured as their Next Gen 2016 issue. During this, Holland revealed how many movies he's currently contracted to appear in:

They give you options, and those could be exercised whenever. Like a cameo in Avengers. I'm unclear as to which movies, though. I do know I have three Spider-Man movies and three solo movies contracted. But if you have another movie, Marvel is so good at working around it. They're very respectful of your life, really. They understand that you have to work on other movies, and they try and fix it up so you can work around each other.

That's right, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man isn't moving anytime soon.

In addition to Spider-Man: Homecoming, it seems that Tom Holland will lead another two solo films. This is a pretty major announcement, although not unexpected. Spider-Man is set to be a major player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward, putting the teenage hero at the same visibility as franchise leads like Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man.

Additionally, Holland revealed that he's set to appear in smaller roles in an unspecified amount of films, likely including the gargantuan Avengers: Infinity War. It should be interesting to see which movies Spider-Man ends up crossing over to. Because his introduction in >Captain America: Civil War was so brief, we don't really know how Peter Parker interacts with the various MCU players we know. Aside from his relationship with Tony Stark, we haven't seen Spidey speak with the other heroes, with the exception being his awesome one liners in Civil War's airport sequence. Did he exchange digits with The Vision and Black Widow? We'll have to wait and see.

>Spider-Man: Homecoming will be enlightening in regards to who Peter Parker really is. He seems to be into superheroics and technology, but he is just a kid. Spider-Man's first solo movie will presumably breathe some fresh air into the MCU, while also helping to diversify the universe with an outstanding multicultural cast.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will swing into theaters July 7th, 2017.

Marvel’s First Phase IV Film Will Be A SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Sequel

Web-head bumps Bad Boys 4’s July 2019 release date.

Spider-Man coming back to Marvel was a pretty big deal. His appearance in Captain America: Civil War was a big deal, and the arrival of the trailer for his first solo Marvel outing is a big deal as well, and following the mostly positive reactions, the good folks at Sony (with the help of Marvel Studios) are looking to bring Spidey back to the big screen on July 3rd, 2019. Despite all the reboot exhaustion and the past decade’s unsuccessful entries, people still get excited for one of the most popular superheroes of all time. They want to see him done right, and Spider-Man: Homecoming feels like a good place to start.

In related news, The Hollywood Reporter name-drops Bad Boys 4 in its report, citing the Spider-Man sequel’s release date as reason for Sony moving the Lawrence/Smith action caper back a few weeks to May 2019. The Joe Carnahan-helmed Bad Boys 3 a.k.a. Bad Boys For Life is set to release January 2018, in case you’re looking to update your sequel calendar, but the most interesting thing in all this as that Marvel's first outing after its massive Thanos-centric Avengers finale will be relatively small and intimate. Colour me excited.

Tom Holland has a six-picture deal to play Spider-Man. Three of those appearances are set to be solo movies, so if all goes well, we can expect him to have a third film around 2021 before potentially passing down the mantle. It’s unknown whether Peter Parker will appear in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War (or its yet untitled 2019 sequel), but we’ll keep our eyes peeled and let you know as soon as something tingles our Spider-senses.

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theatres July 7th, 2017.

RayRay on Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite:

This entire week has been filled with a broad range of opinions by several household names in the FGC. From Bum163 to Justin Wong, it should be clear that the series' true fans are eager to see how Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite will unfold. Many of them are intrigued with the new Infinity Stone-powered sub-system, while others are looking forward to seeing iconic characters make a return.

As Raynel 'RayRay' Hidalgo has been a notable force throughout the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom era, we couldn't pass up the chance to hear his thoughts on what's on the horizon.

Infinite looks like it will be the first crossover fighting game that’s more accessible for casual players. What do you think the game’s biggest challenge will be -- maintaining enough depth for veteran players?

I'm excited for it. With Street Fighter V, I truly believe they figured out how to make an "accessible" game while keeping the infinite depth that comes from the player vs. player aspect. More players. More competition.

How much would you measure the importance that Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite includes a significant amount of characters that contain X-men and other popular mutants?

They have to be in it. They have to appeal to the current Marvel fans as well as fighting game fans. X-Men have been part of fighting games for over 20 years now.

[embedded content]

Give us your overall reaction upon seeing the announcement trailers last weekend.

Well, like most people, I spent the entire week prior to the announcement hearing about the rumors non stop. All it did was build up an insane amount of anticipation. I went crazy â€" literally slammed my desk and started shrieking! [laughs]

Do you plan to stick with Vs. titles exclusively, or will you still balance your time with Street Fighter V and other titles?

I plan to continue playing both games. With the competition at an all time high, I'm not sure if anyone will be able to be dominate without giving it their all.

Many seem concerned about the lack of X-Factor and the assist system. What are your thoughts on Infinite reintroducing the Gems to be used as a groove à la CvS2?

The lack of assists bothered me at first. Trying to be unbiased and thinking about it more, having both characters switch seamlessly is more like having one big character and the gems are like variations. Plenty of depth there!

What features do you feel Infinite must include in order to guarantee it will resonate with veteran players and new players alike?

Versus Mode [laughs] . . .that's always been enough for me. Maybe they can also include a more thought out ranked mode, where ranking up actually means something.

Are there any creative, special modes that you’d like to see included along with the confirmed Story and Mission Modes Infinite will be offering?

Obviously a 4-player 2v2 mode is always fun.

Mega Man X and Captain Marvel are two of the newest additions joining the Vs. universe. What additional characters would you like to see added to the roster?

I'm a fighting game fan, not a comic book fan. I want to see all the classic fighters come back.

What insight would you offer for anyone that feels skeptical about Infinite's success?

Being skeptical with so little information makes no sense. It's that simple. With fighters evolving faster than ever, I say let's crack it open and make it our own again.
